I think they're potential destinations for both Kessler and Lauri. It's too bad the salary match is hard with Nurkic, but maybe we take the hit with Monk's deal and get something? Nah, muh cap space.
Yeah...and having his production on rookie scale is a big benefit to trading him. The longer you wait, the more of that value you're burning for whatever team may want him. Kessler had value as a prospect, but also because he had immediate value with his production compared to salary. The Jazz...
A quick test to assess the tank threat level is to just count the number of real NBA rotation level players they have. They're at like 7-8 before injuries? I didn't realize it was that bad.
It's not like they have amazing top end talent either....though Sabonis is a RS beast and ironman.
Also...
I'm more speaking to the Jazz process and strategy wrt Kessler. Of course Kessler's improved play will increase his value. The part that wouldn't make sense is expecting a big improvement from a guy you didn't believe in. I'm assuming that if the Jazz didn't like him, they didn't expect this...
It's a good point that hasn't been mentioned. Had he been extended, they couldn't trade him (they can but it'd be difficult due to BYC). I don't think the Jazz are particularly high on Kessler, so they may have wanted to keep a trade a possibility. It still would have made more sense for them to...
IMO, having Kessler on a contract that becomes <15% of the cap down the road is more valuable than <$10M in cap space this upcoming summer. But if we get Eason + Ellis I’ll happily be wrong. I don’t even know if there’s a guy worth $30M+ this summer we could target.
I guess my final conclusion on this is that Kessler's next contract is mostly up to what WAS (or anyone else) wants to do. They can give any contract Kessler wants and F us over. Even if nobody offers Kessler a deal, it doesn't mean we win out on waiting. If he plays well we're still probably...
Yeah, like I said. It only takes one team to blow up your spot. And I don't have an argument as to why WAS wouldn't do it. They could do a short term max.
So just to play devils advocate.....how many teams can actually pay Walker Kessler next summer?
WAS
CHI
LAL
BKN
DET
The first 3 seem to be teams that would be very interested in Kessler. BKN may have moderate interest in him....they still have Nic Claxton but they don't have their 2027 pick...
Even if you convinced me they do care about the cap space....I just think that's plain dumb. Did we forget that we're the Utah freaking Jazz? Cap space is not the right strategy for this franchise and especially not at this time. You know what a good use of cap space for this franchise is...
