The argument from a year and a half ago is relevant to the current discussion, because it's the same principle: Tank at all costs. As evidenced now by... the OKC team that became a title contender even without the player they tanked for. If the Jazz could become good enough to secure the 1...
The person who said "Imagine where OKC would be without Chet", when OKC won the 1-seed by a 16-game margin without him, was you.
I really thought you were above disingenous arguments, but maybe I should've known better than to try to have this conversation with the guy who wanted to trade...
You are changing the argument. Nobody is saying the guy isn't a great player. They are, however, arguing that OKC created a team that could still win the #1 seed and compete for championships without him.
So, "imagine where OKC would be if they didn't tank for Chet". We don't have to imagine...
He did a lot worse than not "shoot lights out", but hey, why have an honest conversation when you can be disingenous?
What can't be argued is this: They certainly didn't need him to dominate the league last year, as evidenced by claiming the 1-seed by a 16 game margin despite him missing most...
Well he missed most of last season and they still got the 1 seed by a 16-game margin.
He was also pretty terrible for them in their series against Denver and Indiana.
I think they would've likely been just fine honestly.
OKC would also be trading for the much higher likelihood of getting a pick from us in 2027. They might do that knowing if our pick lands in the top 8 this year, they don't get any pick from us at all.
I subscribe to the theory of quantity over quality when it comes to draft picks.
Accumulate a bunch, and you can land on enough of them without needing to tank. The list of stars who weren't top 5 picks is bottomless.
In 2023 we still ended up with a top 3 player in the draft through the Wolves pick, and in 2024 if we had tanked less we would've conveyed the pick instead of drafting Cody Williams.
So truthfully, we'd have been better off now if we tanked LESS in those years.
