So I like the move. I think it set's the tone for keeping our key players with a "we're ready to win" message, while keeping us flexible enough to make a move in FA 1-2 years from now (when the insane FA impact is settled a bit - this year will be nuts, as in we haven't even begun to see what it's going to be like when every team in the NBA has to increase their salary an average of $20.5M just to be at the MINIMUM) and we know more clearly where we have the greatest need, i.e. is Exum the Man or a bust, is Lyles all that, can Hood compete with Hay as scoring option, etc.
My gut would suggest DL has a target of peak performance for the roster around 2019 or 2020 and is doing everything he can to keep the gang together while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to start winning.
Depth Chart When Healthy - a stab:
PG - Hill 28 / Exum 16/ Neto 4
SG - Hood 18 / Burks 24 / Exum 8
SF - Hayward 32 / Hood 10 / Ingles 6
PF - Favors 22 / Lyles 24 / Booker 2
C - Gobert 30 / Favors 8 / Lyles 4 / Withey 6
Some interesting lineups, not even sure these will all happen but fun to think of and it really does highlight how we are actually resonably flexible now with our roster.
Lid on the Rim: Hill (WS = 6'9"), Exum (WS = 6'10"), Hayward (WS = 6'8"), Favors (WS = 7'4"), Gobert(WS = 7'9")
George Karl's Wet Dream: Exum, Burks, Hood, Hayward, Lyles - Decent size, speed and 3pt shooting at all spots, may not be the Warrior's death lineup but damn fun to watch that would be
F-U Small Ball: Exum, Hayward, Lyles, Favors, Gobert (average height = 6'10", average wingspan = 7' 1.5" and that team isn't some Frankenstein nonsense, I could actually see us playing this)
Screw you Murica: Neto, Exum, Ingles, Lyles, Gobert
vs
Stars and Stripes Forever: Hill, Hood, Hayward, Booker, Favors
Likely starting: Hill, Hood, Hayward, Favors, Gobert (far better than last years gang with the PG upgrade)
Likely second team: Exum, Burks, Ingles, Lyles, Withey (rarely actually really play all 5 together but that's a far cry from last years heinous second units - let's hope the health Karma comes our way)
By the way, just a quick stab at what payroll might look like for a "peak" Jazz outfit in 2019 where a luxury tax is probably around $135M and we are all in at biggest investment to win (please Millers have some guts). Yes I know these are crazy-*** finger in the wind guesses, but it got me thinking at least.
Hayward 25
Gobert 20
Favors 20
Hood 15
Burks 12
Exum 15
Lyles 12
PG2 5
Wing4 3
Wing5 1.5
PG3 1
Big4 3
Big5 1.5
Total 134
And let's hope steady improvement from within yields a synergetic Detroit '04 style behemoth, OR we somehow find that FA acquisition the Jazz never seem to get.
