Cool idea for the NBA circa 2121

So, by 2121 the majority of numbers will be retired. This could be a problem, except...

They will honor new players with the privilege of wearing a retired jersey, only the jersey will have the name of the player it was retired for on it always.

Of course this assumes by 2121 they have a pill for overactive ego.

I just picked a date far enough in the future to pretend that there will actually be enough great players between now and then that would deserve to have their number retired.

I never understood the whole idea of retiring numbers. OK, so Stockton wore 12 and Malone 32. Hang their jerseys in the rafters, but why can't anyone else wear the same number? Even IF a future player wears that number and eventually becomes a star on the team, his jersey will be a completely different design.
