If I were Hayward:

If you are Hayward, you are in a tough situation. What do you do? Do you leave? Do you stay? You can't win a title anywhere due to GS being as good as they will be for at least the next two seasons. So, what do you do?

I'd do what LeBron did: Sign a two year deal with an option for a third year. That would get me paid now, keep me on a winning team, keep me paired with Gobert...

BUT

Also allow me to be a FA in a few years when GS is blown up, you'd be free as well. Maybe you join up with Klay in NY. Maybe you go to LA with LeBron. Maybe you and Paul George go to the other LA. Maybe you can convince someone to come to Utah and join you and Gobert.

Anyhow, that is what I'd do.

I'd probably go to Boston. Get out of the East, especially with the rumors Lebron might go to LA in 2018.

I'd sign with Urah for two years, see if I can make All NBA during that timeframe, keep working on my personal development while I've got a system built around me, and see what the league looks like in a year or two.

I like Boston, but they're not ready for me. It's not clear who is staying or leaving, the rookie is an unknown, and the team isn't better than the Clippers in the grand scheme of things.

I'd sign a 1+1 to stay in Utah. Try to get that player designation exception next year.

I'd probably stay in Utah mostly because I hate packing. Plus going to Boston to be the third or fourth option would be like admitting I wasn't good enough. I would like the pressure and challenge to rise up, to be the man. I'd like to have the coach, owner, gm, all the assistants and trainers, all the arena staff, the fans in the arena and people on the street to know I was the man.

in Boston I would just be the latest in a long line of paid mercenaries, if I win I am supposed to, and if i lose they will toss me aside and either way I will be forgotten as quickly as I arrived.

In Utah I am a hero just for saying I want to stay, for years I will be a man of importance and fame, and with a little luck I could win it all and become immortal.

If I'm Hayward, I honestly dont know what I would do. At 27 with millions already, I would want to win. I want titles. Well, there are two titles in the NBA - conference and finals.

If I stay in Utah and we don't add another really good piece, I won't see the Finals until I am 30 at best. In the East with LBJ almost 33, I have a better shot.

So I ask myself, do I want to possibly play in the finals or do I want a few more million a year? Gosh, I really wish the Jazz FO would add that other really good player to help make my decision easier...

I'm actually currently in a slightly similar situation as Hayward. My old boss who I really liked, just called me and offered me a job that sounds really great, but I really love my current job and current boss.

I'm most likely sticking with my current job since the security of what I know outweighs the potential unknowns of a new job.

When does Hayward decide, or has he already, to opt out?

Maybe I do nothing if I'm him. See what LBJ does next summer. What would beat going to LA with LBJ?

Stay and sign a 1+1 if I am at all worried about the direction of the franchise and make sure they deliver over the next season or 2. Otherwise, sign the 5yr extension now and allow the FO to have clear direction over the next 5yrs, leave a little money on the table in terms of not going for the designated player allowance which will allow the FO to spend a little more and show everyone that he is ALL IN and also willing to sacrifice.

My thought process would be building a team to beat the Warriors, I have unfinished business here. Personally, the thought of having a statue built someone day would also be in the back of my mind.

I wouldn't opt out. Let the Jazz bring in another stud and then sign an extension.

This. I think the obvious stupid decision would be to sign the 5 year max. All that would do is screw over Hayward, especially given Utah's past decisions when it comes to making a buck over making a winner.

Put the pressure on Utah.

The more I think about it, the more I'd lean towards not opting out and seeing what LeBron did next summer vs what the Jazz do. This could be the Lakers in 2018:

Russell/Jackson/Ball/whoever they draft
Hayward
LeBron

That could end up being alright.

I don't know if I'd leave Utah. I'm not sure there is anything better our there, but at the same time, I don't think I'd commit long term either.

So then why not opt out and sign a 1 year max? Why leave $15M on the table?

I'd opt out and then re-sign for the minimum, because when it comes to wanting to compete, I let my actions speak for themselves.

My way he gets to have his cake and eat it too. You get the extra talent that you want, you get half a season to get a sense of your all nba chances and a 210 million dollar pay day. Unless Hayward gets hit by a truck he is gunna get a 30 million dollar contract. Spend 14 million to play on a contending team and have the chance to earn an extra 50 million. Yeah I would do that.

Butler betting on himself paid off handsomely. Hayward can make the All NBA team and earn an even bigger payday all while becoming the greatest threat to GSW.

So then why not opt out and sign a 1 year max? Why leave $15M on the table?

1)cuz you're buying a shot at a ring.

2)Being a top player on a top team is gunna come with endorsements whether that team is in Utah or not. Hayward would be the good guy underdog in this play and Durant the villain.
