Hi my name is Sober and I'm an addict.

It started when I was just a kid, growing up in Utah, the Jazz were my only fix. I was born in the early 80's, but my first real memories of the Jazz were in the early 90's with Stockton, Malone, and Eaton (man I hated Eaton). As a teenager I experimented with other teams, but my main go to was always the Jazz. I was completely hooked watching the '97 playoff run at my friend's house. I vividly remember all of us running around the house screaming when Stockton hit that 3 to clinch the series vs Houston. Moving outside of Utah shortly thereafter just increased my mania for the Jazz. I was at college in Ohio when I found this message board and have spent way more time lurking and now posting than I think is healthy. It's difficult to find real Jazz fans outside of Utah and so this board has been my connection to likeminded sickos.

As an addict I've done some irrational things, some that I'm not proud of. I remember sneaking my walkman in to school with the earphone going through the sleeve of my hoodie to secretly listen to sports talk radio the day after a game. As an adult I've neglected work and family to watch, listen, and read about the Jazz. I've spent entire days at work hitting refresh on Jazzfanz and not getting anything done during a trade deadline day. I've been home, "sick" for free agency opening days. I remember neglecting my entire extended family on a 4th of July picnic when we were expecting the Hayward news (I still maintain it's my family's fault for scheduling a picnic on the day of some major Jazz news). Living on EST currently, I sacrifice my health to stay up way later than I should to finish Jazz games.

If you are reading this then you are on a Jazz message board, months after the season has ended and months before the season will begin. You are likely a Jazz addict. What's your story and what irrational things have you done to get your Jazz fix.

Still can’t believe I’ve been here since 2010…

Time just flew by.

Have we made a conference final since then?

Nevermind... it’s not all out that.

It’s about the friends we’ve made along the way and the memories, good and bad.

That’s the point I think…

Anyway… let’s carry on with the grind.

The Best is yet to come!

Go Jazz (fanz)!

I went to my first game in 1983, I believe.. I went to maybe 4-5 games that season and usually sat in one of the last rows of the Salt Palace where the tickets were cheap. Next year I got season tickets. At some point, I joined a group of people who shared tickets and I have gone to about 1/2 of the home games since. I used to record games on VHS and now DVR all of the games, including the games I go to, just in case there are parts that I want to re-watch. In 1987 I played USO shows overseas with my rock band, and while I was there, I would scour the box scores after each game in the Stars and Stripes to determine why the Jazz won or lost.

Now here I am in my mid-60's, having watched the Jazz from pre-Stockton and Malone to the current rebuild. Although I think the Jazz would have made the play-in 2 years ago with the remnants of the Rudy-Donovan trades, and I don't love every move, I like the young pieces that we have and am hoping that we can start building a contender, after playing Lauri and mostly the young guys this year to get another good piece.

The Jazz have been my anti-depressant many times, but have also required one at other times. :D I am definitely an addict. Oh and I also still play rock and roll.

I joined my first city league team in 1996 in South Texas. Every team had a pro name and my team was called the Utah Jazz. My coach gave me Karl Malone's number and told me to play like Malone. Basketball was the only team sport I gravitated to as it fit my dimensions as a kid that allowed me to be relatively good against my peers. I dont watch any other sport besides basketball, so I can really focus on just basketball. I have no idea how the people who are sports nuts over every sport watch them all.

I vaguely recall watching the Jazz in the Championship games. I remember learning on the radio in the car that they lost in the Finals to the Bulls. I had a sick Bulls pullover jacket and I remember telling my mom to throw it away after I found out. Since I was a child in South Texas in the 90's, I had no way to regularly watch Jazz games, but I would catch highlights on Sportscenter and would read the newspaper for boxscores. I followed the team until my family got high speed internet and I learned how to use the internet to check scores. At some point the internet got advanced enough to where I could watch basically ever game, I want to say it was in D-Will's 2nd season that I was watching nearly ever game, but it might have been the 3rd.

I dont even remember when I first started posting on JFC, but it had to be sometime in the mid 2000's, sometime during the D-Will Era. I wish the old server still existed so I could see how bad my old post were. I posted under the name DwillPwnasauras_Rex. Posting on JFC allows me to scratch two itches that I'd rather keep to the internet, being incredibly argumentative and discussing basketball (I think I know maybe 5 people in real life who are hardcore basketball fans, most people I know are NFL/College Football living in the South). I have 30K more post that the next highest post count, which is probably the biggest sign of my addiction to the Jazz.

Overall I would say my Jazz addiction has probably lowered the past 5 years. I still watch every game, but not always live. I still care a lot, but not as much as I use to. I remember watching a regular season Jazz/Thunder game sometime between 2015-2018 and my heartrate being incredibly high, and it was just a regular season game. I would turn down social events to watch Jazz games, but I dont do that anymore. I'm OK watching the game on League Pass the next day. I'm just way more mellow over the outcome of games now. I feel like I'm less argumentative on JFC tho some posters still push my buttons and bring back the old Cy.

I'm sure I will always follow the Jazz. I think everyone needs some form of escapism that they can delve deep into and engage with. Sometimes I do wonder I could have done if I spent all the time watching/discussing the Jazz and used it to studied something ridiculous like Quantum Physics. Would I be Oppenheimer? I guess we will never know.

I've followed the Jazz since I was a young kid, since the days of Adrian Dantley and Darrell Griffith. I wouldn't say I'm addicted these days, but it's an outlet when I'm taking a break from other things. I've traveled around and followed other teams. I tend to pay attention to the draft, since drafting star players is the only way the Jazz can ascend to the upper echelons of the league.

I grew up in Salt Lake and really started to become a huge sports fan when I was in 2nd grade watching the bulls and jazz. It was fun because I had 2 teams but the bulls were probably 1A for me because of MJ. I was obsessed with Jordan like most kids at that time. Once 96-97 hit I had to pick a team and the choice of the jazz was pretty easy. The energy for those 2 seasons was amazing. There has been some ups and downs over the years and frustrations with team building but right now I'm probably the most excited I have been in a while. I can't wait to see how this team is put together over the next few years.

When I was a young man serving in the US Army in Panama, most of the soldiers in my unit called me by my nickname “Yaz” but some called me “Jazz” instead, knowing my fanaticism for the team. Once this Panamanian woman was asking my army buddy “How is Jaws doing?” and he’s like “Who is Jaws?” until he figures out, “ah, Jazz.”

Saint Cy, I lived in the Rio Grande Valley for 16 years, the food was great and I got to practice my Spanish on a daily basis.

I played lots of basketball as a kid through many leagues partially because I was always the tallest kid in my grade and loved staying busy, but I had never watched an NBA or college game ever.. I moved to Utah from New York during high school (major culture shock). My dad took me to a Jazz Game with great free tickets he got from work. I've been hooked ever since.

I grew up in a town in NE Nevada where all the television stations on our cable were from Salt Lake. Thus I started watching the Jazz and I was hooked.

We had the computer game Lakers vs Celtics late 80s/early 90s and I always played the Jazz, so that was it. Stockton, Malone, Eaton, Griffith, Iavaroni, etc, etc.

We went to the US on a family trip in '95 and did actually go to SLC for a couple of days. Never seen a game live, but I catch most games the next day on League Pass.

Edit: This is in Oslo, Norway, btw.
