Mitt Romney wins NH straw poll

Not a huge surprise but it was a surprise by how much he won by. He got 35% and Ron Paul came in second at only 11%. Also it was interesting how bad Huckabee did. Its way too early but.......

Could Romney get the nomination?

Any chance he could beat Obama?

No and maybe. If he got the nomination there is enough unrest around Obama's presidency that he would have a shot but the mormon label is just too big a target. No way the deep south, where the votes for the repubs come from, is going to vote in a "non-christian mormon".

We'll see what mixing religion with politics is all about if it looks like Romney might get the nomination. He doesn't pass the religious test of the vast majority of conservatives, so opposition on those grounds will grow the more he looks like he might win.

No and No.

Romney has flip flopped too many times. Something his GOP opponents are going to exploit.

Also, the GOP base of the deep south would never vote for a Mormon. No matter how much they may hate Obama, they'd never vote for someone who they believe belongs to a cult. A cult which claims to be Christian but isn't (I'm just repeating what they believe), marries multiple wives, doesn't believe in the Bible, have their own Bible, believe they are the only (true) church, and don't believe we're fully saved by mere faith...

In addition to all of this, Romney belongs to a church that has a living and breathing leadership which claims to receive direct revelation from God. So are you voting Romney into the white house or President Thomas Monson?

Mormons and evangelicals have a history. So I wouldn't even be surprised if things got heated to see someone taking a cheap shot and bringing up the Mountain Meadows Massacre just to create fear and hatred.

Again, I'm not saying that I believe this way. I myself am Mormon. But I know what Evangelicals think of Mormons and I know what Mormons think of them.

I've seen this movie before and know how it ends. Romney has no chance. If Obama has a huge scandal and the GOP wins in 2012, you're probably looking more at the possibility of Palin as the new President than Romney.

Meh, the Momon stuff is out the window. We have an African American president. Race, religion and gender is not much of a factor anymore.

Wrong. Mormons are considered freaks and weird in the rest of the country. And comparing being a Mormon to being African American is ridiculous.

People do not want a Mormon pres.

You know he was elected governor of Massachusetts right?

+7 I think the country is a long way from wanting, let alone accepting, a Mormon president.

He'd have a better shot than Palin imo.
People would be more ready (proper english lol?) for a Mormon president than a polarizing far right woman president.

Plus, Mitt's strong suit is business isn't it? His selling point is he could lead this country through his business savy.
In times like these he could really win a lot of the swing middle of the road dems, and independent voters.

Living in Texas, here's the general conversation I have once people find out I am from Utah:

"Are you Mormon?"

"No."

"Do you know any Mormons?"

"Yes."

"So dude, do they really have like 20 wives?"

"No."

"So what's up with those mission trips?"

"Just a thing they do."

"Yeah I used to know a Mormon once. He/she was nice but weird."

"Cool."

"So can you tell me about Mormon soaking?"

"No."

I think folks in the south, though generally nice, are pretty judgmental. I have not heard so much negativity toward jews, african-americans, etc. in my life til moving to TX. Not so sure that Romney could carry the south.

You know this thread is about Romney dominating a poll for the Republican presidency correct?
Your idiocy never fails to amaze me. You are the one who asked if he get beat Obama. From your first post:
Any chance he could beat Obama?
I responded by saying the country isn't ready for a Mormon president. I wasn't even the first one to bring it up. Another huge FAIL on your part. But then again, we're all very used to that.

First and foremost, for anyone to get excited about a straw poll is silly. These straw polls are taken at gatherings where you typically only find people involved in politics that are fairly hard core about it. Secondly, each candidate usually pays to have local supporters show up at the meeting so as to give them an advantage. The reason Romney won is because Romney made sure he had a lot of supporters at the meeting where the poll was taken. It's not like they got on the phone and polled a cross section of registered Republicans in the state.

And for those that still think it's a big deal, Romney won nearly every straw poll leading up to the '08 Republican presidential nonination. Look how well that worked out for him.

Straw polls, especially early straw polls, mean squat...

That being said, anyone who thinks Obama is taking the country in the wrong direction but would rather stay home and not vote for a Mormon and leave Obama in power gets everything they deserves for not being able to overcome their personal biases.

What about Jon Huntsman?

Even less of a shot than Romney.

Carries with him all the Mormon "baggage" (since it's not really baggage, but simply perceptual baggage) but doesn't have the name recognition or cachet.

For a little look at how much straw polls matter have a good laugh at this roundup of 2007 straw polls about the 2008 race:

Candidate: # of straw poll Wins

Ron Paul: 25
Fred Thompson: 24
Mitt Romney: 22
Rudy Giuliani: 7
John McCain: 5
Mike Huckabee: 2
Duncan Hunter: 2
Alan Keyes: 0

Obviously we can see what a great predictor that turned out to be for the ultimate presidential nomination.
