4. Kevin O'Connor, Utah Jazz (last year: 2)

STYLE: Networker.

THE GOOD: He may have traded Deron Williams too early, but he got one heck of a package in return for him, and now has one of the deepest frontcourts in basketball. One could argue getting one of Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter for Williams is a good deal. O'Connor ultimately got both.

THE BAD: He had a tough job, but Tyrone Corbin wasn't overly impressive in his first few games replacing Jerry Sloan. The Al Jefferson trade didn't work out as planned, and dealing a superstar like Williams is always risky.

BOTTOM LINE: O'Connor sure gave his rebuilding effort a hard kick with the assets he received in the Williams deal, proving once again he's one of the best.

Agreed, and the Al Jefferson trade didnt work out as planned...?? Even though it was for two protected first rounders and Koufos?? The Corbin quip makes slight sense I suppose, even though we should wait a little before both fans an analysts judge his coaching.
 
Yeah, how could the D-Will trade have been too early? It was the day of the trade deadline, wasn't it? And if we had waited till after the finals (right before the beginning of the lockout) I'm not sure New Jersey would have taken the chance on him. Plus, if we had waited that long, we wouldn't have Burks either.

No, I think the timing of that trade was perfect.
 
The timing was absolutely perfect. Especially if we lose this season, we would not have had him at all. We lucked out in the lottery, we were able to get Burks, how was this bad? The only bad is for New Jersey if DWill gets injured in Turkey, or decides to join another team next year.

The timing was also perfect because Deron was hurt. Williams wasn't going to turn NJ into a winner last season - and it was doubtful he would have led the Jazz to the playoffs; the downward spiral had already started WITH Williams in the starting lineup. Getting Favors and an unprotected pick, which we figured would fall in the top-7 at the time of the trade, was an absolute steal. KOC must have positioned the deal as getting two solid assets for an all-star, with Devin Harris thrown in as a salary dump for NJ.

As for Jefferson, yes, he's not the 2-way player we had hoped for. But it wasn't like we we're going to re-sign Boozer. So KOC essentially "traded" a 20/10 player who doesn't play defense for a 20/10 guy who doesn't play great help defense but at least blocks a few shots and played in every game (and is a bit cheaper).

Corbin...jury is still out. He was voted as the 2nd-best assistant in the NBA before the season began. Let's give him a chance. I don;t think anyone would have fared much better. The team was in disarray from Deron revolting, Sloan quitting and then the influx of new players. That the Jazz played much better the last two weeks gives me hope. I think a coach needs at LEAST the opportunity to install "his" system and have a training camp and one season with a team before you can judge his abilities.
 
KOC has been terrific, well deserving of the number #4 ranking. I'm a little leery of Corbin, but there isn't much else out there.
 
If he can move Hayward or Burks and avoid the mayhem that is to come if he doesn't than he'll probly get moved into number one spot!
 
Honestly, Kevin O'Connor's DWill trade has a high likely-hood of being pseudo-highway robbery. If the lockout takes away a season, we traded away 2 months of williams for favors kanter and harris. Definitely a top 3 GM with this trade alone; then you include the drafting of Hayward, Burks, the Jefferson acquisition. It stacks up.

Well if the Nets are able to resign Dwill, then have Dwill attract a FA like Howard, then the trade worked out for them. That's what will probably happen.

I think that has been the hope all along for the Nets. With fresh Russian mafia blood running the show, why not try to start with an established star. The timeline given for a championship to management is unreasonable unless you roll the dice with something big. DWill is a good place to start, but the odds of them landing a 2nd big name is tough, this is NJ after all.........

Even with that said, the Nets HAD to move, and don't blame them for passing off future talent for the "now".
 
What i like most about KOC is his professional attitude and how he manages to keep quiet before any transaction he does. There are really loose mouth GMs, we are lucky to have one that keeps his mouth shut and just do the business

That's what they hope will happen. If I had to wager a bet, I'd put my money on Deron going to the Lakers. By then, one of their big salaries will come off the books and LA definitely needs an upgrade over Fisher. It was a huge gamble by King and Prokhorov, giving up two top lottery picks.

Regardless of what happens in NJ, it was almost certain Deron wasn't going to stay in Utah - and after he revolted against Sloan, I don't think it was even a possibility. And Utah is now free of a MAX contract for a PG, something which a lot of posters should be happy about.

I am glad he is black, but not playing the future for the Jazz after we were eliminated from the play-off race was not very smart. Also, not having Millsap miss the free throw costing us a game was not very smart either. The jury is still out on Corbin. I still say Corbin needs to get a great defensive assistant coach, if he truly wants to be highly succesful.
 
I agree that Corbin needs a good defensive coach by his side. Karl Malone said he would be there waiting when ever the Jazz called him. I think having Malone teaching our young players the tricks of the trade to becomine great defensive players, would be a huge attribute to our team.

Seriously, this is one of the things that are wrong in the world. Of course if someone doesnt like Corbin it MUST be because he is black.
