What's new

So Apple now has a patent on a rectangle

That's actually a point Apple didn't win on.

Apple is out of control. For whatever reason they get a pass on taxes and keeping money overseas. The left will have you know how evil Romney is but they never mention the billions that Apple has stashed outside the US. All the while, Apple and Steve Jobs are darlings of the Occupy Movement.

Of course, Apple shouldn't be allowed to sue anyone for any kind of patent infringement after they stole the hell out of Xerox's gui.

Are they?

As an Occupy Movement sympathizer, I will just say that no corporation is a darling to me. The fact that I exist and don't want to live the life of a waif means almost everything I purchase funnels into monsters that will never be placated. To me, that's the source of the frustration, that we're so far up the creek that we don't know what to do, so we'll just all agree that **** is ****ed.

Wow, what a surprise, could have never guessed Numb.

Anyway, it is funny how Apple used to be the little guy everyone loved standing up to the mean monster of Microsoft....Oh how times have changed. I love it. Certainly glad I just bought Iphones for family, and not the Samsung knockoffs :D

I hope that the damages get lowered significantly on appeal. It seems the jury didn't follow their instructions to base damages on actual losses only. A juror was quoted as saying that they wanted the damages to be painful but within reason.

These monsters make stuff you want. Without them how would everything be produced? The Soviet Union tried a different approach...it didn't work. Maybe just try to look at things the way they are and stop imagining monsters.

This is not entirely true. "The left" has been all over Apple for dodging taxes, outsourcing, and even the work conditions of their Chinese plants. And Apple isn't even running for president.

The patent ruling was bunk. It will surely be overturned in an appeal. They just need to make sure the jurors are tech savvy. If the extent of their tech knowledge is their iPhone, iPad, and laptop, then they shouldn't be issuing any verdicts.

US patent law is totally broken, everyone knows that. But if Apple is actually rewarded and their competition forced to stop selling competing products, then the system is downright criminal.

If you do a little research you'll find that a lot of Apple's patents were "ideas" that Apple had not even done yet. Even worse, the "ideas" were actually done by other companies.

These patent trolls would see something a competitor was doing, patent it, somehow get the patent approved, and now they're suing the others who have been doing it.

Meanwhile Motorola (now owned by Google) has a bunch of patents that they actually owned before anyone else did it (like the cell phone itself) but the judge ruled they're invalid.

So, inventing a cell phone isn't worthy of a legit patent. However, looking at someone else's product and patenting a bunch of its features before anyone else is totally fine.

Broken system and Apple should be punished for trying to exploit it the way they do.

Good post Salty. The patent law really does need to be fixed. Until then, everyone is just going to ramp up the lititgation and the attorneys will get paid big time.

The jury's decision to award 1b+ to Apple is patently absurd(no pun intended). Clearly Apple did perfect the smartphone and tablet form factors, and many of their functions So did Ford when they perfected the car. I don't recall them suing others for implementing the steering wheel. Nor do I remember television companies suing each other over the volume nob. That's why we don't have cars with an ***-plate for steering, or TVs that require you to clap your feet to change the channel. Or, more realistically, only a single successful car and TV company (Apple's intention). If Apple continues to get its way, this is very bad news for consumers indeed. Additionally, Apple is messing with tech-culture. The tech industry has always operated with ideals of openness and cooperation, an outcome of the PC's inception in the counterculture movements of the 60s. This has given us a vibrant and fast evolving industry that enhanced our lives in countless ways. Microsoft used to be the thorn in the side of these ideals, and now Apple has taken its place.

So in summary. Go Google!
