The Lauri Thread

If Lauri starts playing a little better, we should trade him. Not sure if we have to wait till December (or the summer like Embiid) but it makes no sense to not trade him imo.

Lauri clearly won’t fit our timeline. He, along with Sexton and Collins, two other players who shouldn’t be in our future, should also be moved. Stockpile more picks. In the offseason, sign the best two vet leaders possible. Guys who can truly lead and help groom young players. Then give our 1st rounder, Keyonte, Collier, Hendricks, and whoever else a **** ton of time. Even if it’s to the tune of 13 wins. **** it. Great players need to learn how to fight and win. Tough to do that when other guys are options 1, 2 and 3.
Can't trade Lauri till the off season

I was just posting factual stats is all. Not nitpicking anything.

So then why not say he’s been a lot better lately instead of he sucks because his stats are down. To me he looks like a guy who is going to score 20 a game on 6-7 ast and shoot 37-38% from three as a finished product.

Reality is that he’s not a finished product 21 year old playing out of position pg who is the best pg on the team. Not sure why you think he should be a world beater already. He’s been really good the last two weeks.

No vet leaders that can still ball have any interest in taking part. They can get another Patty Mills that's realistically already done, but exactly what does that help?

Guys stuck on 13 win teams season after season will only learn to lose and to not care. That's been proven so many times.

This thread is about trading lauri or building around him now. I wanted to build around him but then several factors changed my mind. One of those factors is the fact that keyonte hasn't improved like I thought he would.
If he is what you say he will be in like 5 years then thats cool and I agree, I too think he will be a good player, but that is too late to build around lauri. Keyonte sucking currently is one of the factors to making me want to trade lauri

Can you provide some evidence of the second statement? Has there ever been a single player who played for a team that only won 13 games season after season?

There haven’t been very many teams that bad. It’s pretty rare. I will say that Mitch Richmond was on a bad Kings team most of his career. Not sure why he never tried to get out, and when he did finally he went to just as bad a team in the wizards. If there was ever a star that didn’t care, it was him, oh and he retired at age 36

The "13 wins" was from @Keefe - and I'm sure everyone but you understood it to mean a complete tanking team, not their actual record.
Ya, you could have worded it differently for sure but I forgive you.

You also used the word "only"
Im sure there are examples of players who played for bad teams and ended up being good.

Almost anyone is damned to mostly suck within the basketball ambient DA created.
Lauri has become too good to just suck, but he certainly will have a setback season, with all that it implies for his future value... be it in a Jazz uni or not.
The sooner we understand it, the sooner it will stop itching our a$$es.
Of course the alternative would be not to think about it and just start enjoying the itchy a$$.

Nah, Lauri hasn’t suddenly lost his skills. Not worried about him. Put him on a team that moves the ball and has a playmaking point guard, and he'll do just fine.

I can also almost bet my *** they don't use as much pain releaving injections, other drugs and such in a tanking team and rather treat any muscle issues less invasively,it's better for long term health. I'm almost sure they did treat Lauri (or anyone for that matter) more aggressively when Jazz had their all star game two seasons back and he, and the team wanted to be their best.

That said, one can only hope these back spasms won't become reoccurring problem. He had them in his first or second season into NBA for some while, and it's never good to have them come back.

Lauri is playing like he wants Flagg on the team.

In all serious. The back stuff scares me after Favors. It almost all feels too similar.

I'm happy for the current state of the tank, but concerned that this could be a long term thing.
I think the worry is legit and the biggest drop in his offensive game has been at how he finishes around the rim. He used to posterize guys quite often and have a lot of crafty finishes when fouled for and-1s... but this season it seems both of those are largely missing. His FG% around the rim is at 57.8% which is the lowest mark of his career and about 15% worse than what he averaged in the past 2 seasons.

Worst case scenario is that this is toll from him being #1 here and opponents playing him very physical. Best case scenario is probably that he is purposefully playing less reckless around the rim due to the nature of this season and the fact that there is no need to sacrifice your body at this point.

Umm, we're talking about a guy who insisted on playing injured for a team that was desperately trying to lose to improve its draft positioning over the final stretch of a season.

Yeah... I don't think so.

In fact, you could almost say that Lauri is known for playing hard and destroying his body even when it doesn't necessarily make much sense. Employee of the Month syndrome. I'm pretty sure he has the most miles on his legs out of all true NBA 7 footers who've played as long as him.

I don't need Lauri to play reckless around the rim or posterize people, but he's just not moving at all like a guy who has a healthy lower back. He's very stiff, upright, robotic and groundbound – and that's how you play when you're trying to protect your back and avoid unpredictable movements. It's not necessarily an injury per se, but nagging long-term wear and tear that's bothering him more and more.

IMO he's carrying too much weight too.

I don't really understand why he or the team focused so much on him putting on weight last offseason.

Did anyone really think that was a problem with Lauri's first two years in Utah...?

Even ignoring that weight can have negative impacts, his passing and ball handling were clearly bigger issues to focus on.

We're in an unfortunate situation where Lauri probably needs to be traded but can't be traded next offseason due to his struggles this season and his declined trade value making it impossible for Ainge to realistically trade him without getting a ton of heat from Ryan Smith.
