Why?
Kobe is owed nearly 60 million over the next 2 years.
He has a ton of miles on his knees/legs
Team is heading in the wrong direction
They could then trade Bynum for Howard
Trade Gasol for a starter and cap room
Build around Howard.

Why not?
It's Kobe. Laker fans might riot
Kobe is not the problem. Gasol/Bynum etc need to go instead.
Kobe is well worth the money. Losing him hurts the bottom line too much.
Lakers take a bad hit with players by dumping Kobe.

Too important for jersey sales, game-attendance, and Lakers fandom. The guy is the face of the franchise, and has been for a decade. To sacrifice all of this for the potential of *maybe* landing a free agent (that will still be a worse player than Kobe) really doesn't strike me as highly likely. Mike Brown being fired seems more likely. A Gasol trade seems the most probable.

First of all, why amnesty him when you could get something in return via trade. And second of all you DONT trade him. Kobe IS the Lakers. He is still a top 5 player in the NBA. He was 2nd in the NBA in scoring. Bynum for Howard would solve a lot of problems. But the problem is the bench, point guard, and coach. I just dont see the Lakers ever trading Kobe...
