What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

Watched a movie that didn't get even close to as much attention as it deserved. The Drop. As always Tom Hardy is so good. I believe it was James Gandolfini's last film also. Loved it.

I disagree on Hardy. I think he may be the most overhyped, overrated actor currently working. We want him to be the next Bale. Hell, I've wanted him to be. I had loved him. But he's not even close as far as his acting chops go.

I loved him in Locke and he was solid in Tinker, Tailor and Warrior and Bronson and I guess I'd say very good as Bane in TDKR but he's far from great. In Warrior, like I said, he was solid, but in that and The Drop, his semi-retarded Rocky Balboa-esque American accent is so awful and overdone, it's off-putting. Between those two movies and Lawless and Warrior, the whole quiet but tough guy routine is getting really old and is now as unimpressive as Gosling's dark, brooding stick in the mud acting. And don't get me going on the ****show that will be Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller should have to retire immediately for this reimagining which looks God awful with Hardy lumbering along with not even a tenth of the charisma and emotional depth of Gibson. Don't get me wrong, Hardy's not a bad actor. But he's really only average.

#donerant

In short, I'd like to see him take on some more dramatic Brit roles because I think that's where his strength lies.

Imitation game.

Solid effort, but there was no suspense there and left me wanting more. It just felt like another run of the mill historical flick.

Now that I've seen all of the Oscars BP nominated films I'd have to say my personal favourite is Boyhood (genuine, honest), followed by Whiplash (what a roller coaster ride) and Theory of Everything (based on the acting). Here's my ranking:

Boyhood
Whiplash
Theory of Everything
Grand Budapest
Imitation Game
American Sniper
Birdman
Selma

Boyhood to me of all the movies has the most heart and is by far the most honest. It didn't feel like I was watching a movie. It didn't feel like anything was forced. The actors felt like real people to me and I really connected with all the characters. The message I took from it was that every moment is to be cherished and treasured. I came away looking the world from a different perspective and I guess that's all you can ask from a film.

I really hope it wins Best Picture and Richard Linklater definitely deserves an Oscars for Best Director as well for this absolute gem.

Did you know it took 12 years to make boyhood?
Yeah we've been discussing this. Some of us doesn't think it's that big a deal. But I think it added a lot to the substance and feel of the movie. You are invested and connected to his life than a typical movie imo, and are more eager to find out more and more as the film progressed. It is a unique movie for sure.

John Wick was the best movie I'd seen all year and I'm not a big shoot 'em up action fan. Never has the one word line "oh" made me laugh so hard in a movie. If you haven't seen it, it is well worth watching.

Finally saw Nightcrawler. It was a good movie but it failed to build enough tension to make the ending exciting. Not in my top 5 of 2014.

Watched a pretty decent little horror flick last night. Starry Eyes ... a bit of a slow build but not too bad and then **** gets dark. And some decent boobage at the end.

Yeah if you're comparing it to a similar film, I think Drive was better executed with better suspense and much more chemistry between leading roles.

Simplicity in white and black. Loved how it was shot. Great music. %96 on RT.

Yes you should watch Drive if you haven't already seen it. It really is one of my top 10 favourite film of all time. There is a bit of violence in it which means it's not for everybody, but the chemistry between the lead actors is just so mesmerising, I can't recall another movie with such high intensity between the actors in recent memory.

I will. I am pretty sure it is a good movie. I have been loving your reviews lately. Keep it up.

I just watched dallas buyers club.
Pretty good movie. Maconahey killed it.

If not for him I don't think I would have liked it.
Talk about committing to a role.

Yeah he did. It was a real break-out for him imho. I think he has really re-defined his career with some of his recent stuff.

But other than his performance I didn't like the movie personally. Just didn't do it for me.

You didn't like Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club? I thought he was awesome. May be even moreso than Matthew.

Drive is great. My favorite scene in the film is actually between two more minor characters where *spoiler spoiler spoiler*

Bryan Cranston gets killed by Albert Brooks. Besides the fact that Brooks is a personal favorite, that scene is just a masterclass on personal dynamics in small settings.
