Alec Burks and the Man, the Plan

So Burks changed his entire shot and release? That is a little risky but guess with 9 months off he has the time to do something drastic like that.

I'm tired of this myth, Utah is gaining a good reputation I think around the league of being an organization that takes good care of it's players and has a solid plan for the future.

LOL- no it hasn't. If anything Utah's reputation has taken a step back with the Kanter fiasco. Yeah, it's been well documented that Kanter is a big baby but when it comes to issues between players and management, the players are going to side or at least empathize with the player 99% of the time. In spite of the source, when a player comes out and demands a trade and says he was never happy somewhere, then, like it or not, it resonates around the league.

Watching the videos of him working on his shot, to me it looks like his form has not changed much.

I think mostly he is just seeing his feet better and being more balanced, and also putting more arc on his shot. Nothing drastic

Good post, I'm very excited about Burks return. You can tell he is hungry to play and really wants to play well next season. When his shooting % from the rim was brought up Burks was almost upset at the questions, he was like...dude WTF, I am playing on one arm.
I think a full offseason to get worked into Quins system will be really helpful for him too. I really like that he is trying to slow the game down and read the defense instead of just attacking. If he can read defenses and attack from that he could be our explosive playmaker

I'm really excited about the return of Burks. The fact that him and Hood can compete against each other is going to be awesome. They will push each other to be better, because you know they both want to be the starter. I know both are humble though, and would come of the bench if asked. Can you imagine if Burks makes a Jimmy Butler type improvement next year?

A boy can dream..

Except in this case you have multiple players calling him out while the FO stays mum. If it was the FO and Kanter going at it I'd be more inclined to agree.

But when it is Booker, Gobert, Ingles, Hayward, Burke and Favors going at him...

While what you are saying is generally true, I believe in this case it is not. Everyone in the world can see how hap[y the other guys are and how the Jazz improved without Kanter. As someone else said, it is the players, not the FO who are calling him out. They are all raving about the team, and everyone who has the potential to leave has said they want to stay.

NBA Teams and players are not blind. OKC hopes to be able to get some good value out of Kanter, but who here believes they are going to give him the big contract he wants? If he is still there in the future, it will be at a lower salary than he thinks he is worth My bet is he goes somewhere else, also for less than he thinks he is worth.

This "fiasco" hurt him much worse than it did the Jazz.

The Burks interview during the Houston game was interesting, especially when he talked about how much he felt he learned by observing and being so involved with the coaches most of the season. He made it sound like being injured could become a blessing in disguise. That makes me excited.

It possibly might be. Gives him an extended training plan starting with basics under Snyder's team. Fromt he sounds of it this rehab is more than just healing from his injury. It is retrainign him on bad habits as well. Foot work, shot technique and speed have all been specifically mentioned as having been tweaked in training and rehab.

I was impressed with Burks interview and his bit during the game. The guy could hardly talk when he got here. I remember when Locke asked him if he could have dinner with any three people dead or alive who would he have dinner with? Burks named three Rappers. It was hilarious. He is maturing and for me, the big difference on how effective he will be is how well he plays defense. He is athletic enough, but he was pretty poor defensive player under Corbin. But then again, HE DIDN'T HAVE GOBERT STANDING BEHIND HIM!!!

I just got the impression that the two didn't really like each other but I may just be reading to far into things. Content itself was about par with the other interviews. Just didn't flow like the others.

I got that too. Locke has flip flopped a lot on Alec, just like he did with Enes, and with Alec being injured, I'm sure he's had more time to hear and read a lot of it.

Locke never embraced Alec or Enes (while he was on the team), like he has our other players. Be it the lockout, Jerry's retirement, trading D-Will, the 8th seed potential roster, the rent-a-vet roster, or the hanging on to Ty one year too many, etc. Both of those players wanted to play more, but Locke was in a position where he had to support the FO and the coach for his own job security. How do you support the coach and FO in those years? You tell the fans that the lottery talent drafted wasn't worthy of playing time, because you can't tell your fans that the team is a mess, in limbo, and their are internal power struggles over what direction to take. The rookies from other draft classes didn't inherit the same amount of mess and uncertainty as those from the 2011 class, as Gordon was drafted to a good team, Derrick was who we got for our all star and was only the third big once the writing on the wall was clear with Memo (and Favors was a defensive big in a front court that needed that), we didn't draft in the first round in 2012, and were mostly decided on our direction by end of 2013 when we drafted Trey, just needed Ty to prove he wasn't worth it.

Alec is here to stay, and Alec has always had a lot of potential. Locke needs to be consistently fair if he wants Alec to like him.

I think Burks will fit in great with the new team. Why?

Alec, when healthy can:

1. Put pressure on the rim, finish, draw fouls, or both.
2. Is actually really good with catch and shoots from 3.
3. Has shown signs of being a really good on-ball defender. With a front court of Derrick and Rudy, that's what is asked of our guards. They pressure the ball hard, but if their man beats them they're hesitant about facing the Wasatch Front.
4. Alec plays with pace, which Quin is still intrigued with. We played slow to learn concepts and build habits, and it is what a rookie PG and Trey could do. With Alec, Bryce, and possibly Neto, as well as having Hood being healthy and likely taking more of slo mo's minutes. i expect we'll play a little faster next year.

Alec just needs to work on passing and using the pick, but it sounds like he has been learning a lot in his time off the floor.

With Exum, Hayward, Hood, Gobert and Favors there could be a lot of those catch and shoot 3s. Gobert is very good about passing out to the 3 point line when needed.
