What's new

Following potential 2015 draftees

Mudiay is going to have to prove himself in workouts--what kind of shooter he can be and if his athleticism and handle compare to guys like Tyreke and John Wall. A fair number of teams already have PGs they like and have oter needs. Either Mudiay or Russell could drop a couple slots on account of that, but I'm guessing teams will be enamoured with Russell's shooting.

Johnson's range is probably 8-11 right now. He's good at most things, but not really elite at any one thing.

I have always liked Bobby.. but something worries and I'm not sure what it is. I guess just watching him for a few years has left me seeing a really good college player but I'm not seeing a pro. He can defend and rebound with decent touch so I guess he has a decent enough floor. Just can't quite put my finger in it.

The thing is that the NBA game is just made for guys with Portis' size and skills. Anddray Blatche was lazy, not real bright, not super athletic, etc., but he could put up 25/12 pretty easily. Guys with that kind of length, mobility and basic scoring touch are effective. Keep in mind, the guy we're drafting here is a back-up. He's our Adam Keefe or Greg Foster.

Portis has big feet, needs to work on his core strength and needs upper body strength. If he'll work on his body, he can be a player.

My mid-April board for the Jazz with some notes(notes are almost the same as in my previous board):

1. Russell - this is the first time I am putting Russell No. 1... His offensive playmaking and shooting can be great for this team, I feel like he's the best fit for the team and quite possibly the best player. He's the closest thing to a Curry in this draft or in most drafts. Amazing off-the-dribble shooting, amazing playmaking and passing, great vision... I love him next to Exum in the long run.
2. Towns- I like him better than Okafor, he has better current-NBA skills than the somewhat outdated style that Okafor plays, he's also much better defender and rim protector, better passer, better shooter.
3. Okafor - he's an exceptional offensive player, especially in the post, but I feel like the NBA right now is moving away from the post game and post-game is one of the least efficient ways to score.
4. Mudiay - most of my "scouting" on him is done by highlight videos so I mostly go by what real scouts have written and said about him, I like what I've seen on highlight reel, I don't know much about his shortcomings though
5. Hezonja - still high on him. I actually think I might move him ahead of Mudiay by draft time. I love his shooting and his athleticism, I think he has everything to be an exceptional two-way player in the league.
6. Winslow - I love this guy. Finally decided to move him ahead of Johnson(I think I had him ahead of Johnson in the beginning of the season, but his mid-season slump made me put him behind him... no longer, Justise prevails!)... I just like him better. He seems like a smart player, like a team player, like a player who does all the dirty work and all the little things that make you win games. According to reports he's a great team player and a gym rat. He's shooting ridiculous 67-70% around the rim and is taking about 60% of his shots around the rim. That's crazy efficiency. Great in transition, great at finishing through contact. His 3p shot is not bad either, shooting about 40%. his FG% falls because of his midrange struggles, but I believe if he's indeed a hard worker like they say he is, that he will improve in that area as well... Also... exceptional defender.
7. Johnson - I like him... I like his defensive intensity and I like he takes pride in his defense. I am still not sold on his offensive game.
8. WCS - how nice would it be to have a second defensive monster and rim protector on the team - take Gobert out for some rest... oh you think you can score in the paint now that the Stifle tower is out? Nope, WCS is in the game.
9. Porzingis - I absolutely love his offensive potential and outlooks. He can be a "generational player" in offense. Smooth shot(both out of curls, on spot ups, on turnaround jumpers), great athleticism, great runner on the break. His feel for the game and IQ, as well as off the ball defense make him a very risky pick, though.
10. Oubre - crazy measurements, very raw, some questions about his attitude... I would be good with us getting him and giving him to Quin to develop. Looks like a good project.
11. Poeltl - I've been falling in love with him as the season was progressing. I love him as a project to develop behind Gobert. Great defensive upside, good in the pick'n'roll, good athleticism and size. Wouldn't mind if we picked him up.
12. Portis - Rarely do you see great defensive bigs who can stretch the floor, he seems a bit raw too, but I still like him...
13. Turner - another project big who can shoot and seems to have good rim protection prospects. He's interesting but he seems limited in everything else he does on the floor.
14. Kaminsky - polished big who can stretch the floor, I've seen several scouts and draft experts say he'd be a good pick for Utah... I can see the appeal, he's probably one of the players in this draft most ready to contribute right away, and to add to this - he seems like a great complement for both our bigs... the problem with him is... I think he has a limited upside and is most probably going to be a good rotation player at most.
15. Looney - the more I watch him, the less I like... he seems very limited offensively to me. He plays hard at times, and then he just lets opponents walk over him on the glass. He fights like a lion for a rebound, and then just gives up inside position. I really don't know what to make of him. To me he's one of the weirdest prospects to evaluate, I might be completely off on him and he might turn into a beast, but I don't like his skill... Most of his damage in offense is done on jumpers and on the glass. He shows some glimpses as a ball-handler, but seems raw to me.
16. Dunn - my favourite player to watch in this year's college basketball... such an exciting basketball player. He might be a bit raw, has TO issues(which I think are very corrigible), but also has crazy assist numbers and great speed and measurements. Has insane defensive potential too. I don't think we need to pick a PG late in the lottery but if we are going to pick a PG I like his prospects better than Grant and Wright.

Well.. 2015 just may be out last year we have a shot at our own pick being in the lottery. We'll just he too good from there on.

28. Chris Alexander

Seems Dekker would be a great fit on this team, actually. Can play and guard both SG and SF. And I believe his shooting will get more consistent. Similar to Hayward.

Turner at #12?

Geniuses think alike.

Dekker's release is not very smooth... or at least not consistently smooth. He flings it and it comes out weird sometimes. I don't think he can be 38% shooter if he doesn't fix that...

Top 10 (bpa)

1. Towns
2. Okafor
3. Russell
4. Mudiay
5. Hezonja
6. Winslow
7. Johnson
8. WCS
9. Porzingis
10. Everyone else

Top 10 (Jazz)

1. Russell
2. Towns
3. Mudiay
4. Okafor
5. Hezonja
6. Winslow
7. Johnson
8. Porzingis
9. WCS
10. Trade down/out

Normally I'm a believer in going bpa & letting the roster sort itself out, but with the foundation that this team already has in place, I think fit needs to be strongly considered when we draft.

I would still draft Oubre or Dunn before thinking about trading out. That assumes you don't really care about drafting a third big.

Player A: 6'5" / 212 lbs / 8'6" standing reach; 21.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 4.4 apg, 3.1 tov, 2.2 stl, 50% FG%, 32% 3-pt

Player B: 6'3" / 205 lbs / 8'5.5" standing reach; 15.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 7.5 apg, 4.1 tov, 2.7 stl, 47% FG%, 35% 3-pt

Player A is Dwayne Wade his sophomore year at Marquette.

Player B is Kris Dunn his sophomore year at Providence.

Yeah, it's a reach. I think Dunn wears #3 to pattern his game after DWade, btw.

Oubre is one of the few i would consider at 12 beyond the names I listed, but I would first attempt to trade down/out in order to acquire extra assets as I see him as a big risk. I also like Dunn, but would be hesitant to use a lottery pick on a player who doesn't have the potential to eventually start. That is the same reason that I don't think we should draft a 3rd big with our pick. I think this draft is deep enough that we can trade down, acquire an extra asset or 2, & still draft our future 3rd big. Imo, lottery picks shouldn't be wasted on long-term bench players (unless they are potentially elite players who bring unique qualities that the team is otherwise lacking) by small market teams.

I'd rather stick with and develop Exum. A bird in the hand...

I'm very against bringing someone in to start over Exum.

But I would draft Dunn. I'd be down for developing him behind Dante. I think we're all ready to move past Trey, and Dunn has a lot of upside.
