(CNN)American Pharoah, the odds-on favorite, became the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown, winning the Belmont Stakes on Saturday evening.The 3-year-old bay colt led wire-to-wire and defeated second-place Frosted by a comfortable margin.
He is the first Triple Crown winner since 1978, when Affirmed won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

very exciting - I had a good feeling about this race!


I used to watch the three big races all the time growing up - my mom had a friend from college who was from a family that raised thoroughbreds and we'd always watch to see if we could spot her in the crowd. I remember what a big deal it was when Secretariat won the Triple Crown, and then there were a couple more within the next few years. It seemed like it was going to be a regular occurrence - - and then nothing for 37 years!
