What's new

Lyles is the pick at 12

And yet, still more informed than the guy who just watched this player for the first time. 4 for 27 from the college 3, but let's draft him to be a stretch 4 cuz his form looks nice. Sorry, normally I would be right along side you with the wait and see approach, but like I said, this is one of only 2 players I really didn't want, and my uninformed opinion has been pretty accurate in the past.
.
Here's what my uninformed opinion got right week's ago in this draft:
.
Russell to the Lakers with Towns first and Okafor 3rd
Mudiay dropping out the top 4
Hezonja being the first wing taken
.
Obviously we are all just amateurs here, but it doesn't mean that we are all just guessing like fans who don't pay much attention.

Jazz draft on BPA.

The numbers don't suggest that he is a good shooter, but his form looks good.

There's no point dwelling on his college 3PT shot, he had like 30 attempts in college. Who knows how many of them were end of half heaves or late shot clock.
The 25/40 NBA distance 3s isn't telling either, but probably better than Kanter could do at age 22.

Boozer is undersized. Size is one of Lyles strengths. Lyles shooting stroke is such that the Jazz feel he can extend to the 3 point line. Boozer could go to 18 feet but was never going to be a 3 point shooter.

Didn't really like Lyles, but I like that the Jazz recognized they needed a legit 3rd big and one who has real skill offensively and definite potential to be a stretch 4. He didn't hit the 3 at Kentucky, but the shooting stroke is solid and he should improve without much problem. He's a versatile big man with good length and athleticism who can put it in the floor. Didn't show much at UK, but the natural ability is there and he fills a major need on the Jazz.

Looks to me like a lot of his shots are catch and dribble pull ups. Not the easiest shot but he makes them. Why can't it stretch?

Because he's a lotto pic is the only explanation I've read.

Lyles feels a bit like the Gordon Hayward pick. He's a really smart player. Very versatile. He makes the right play and can do a lot of things. We need Gobert and Exum to pan out, but Lyles can be our Lamar Odom.

Wings are slipping yes!
I went to class late to see who we pick.
We take Lyles? It's for someone else. Jazz will trade him.
Hurried off.
Hurried home.
Nope.

Disappointed

I don't hate Lyles but this is a safety pick.

The one who always gave 100% on defense, played through injuries (or came back as quickly as he could from them), put the team first and wanted to win more than "just having fun." Yes, that Carlos Boozer!

Yep that's the exact part they were comparing not the offensive potential, all the attitude and off the court stuff, because Lyle is from Canada and Boozer is from Alaska so same thing basically right.

Really though how many here wanted the Jazz to draft Boozer over Borchert (me included) and were pissed as all get out they didn't draft Boozer, so this same player your knocking is the same play almost everybody wanted the Jazz to draft in the first round.

I find it amusing that some are resorting to the Hayward draft threads to "prove" that since almost all of us were wrong about one pick (honz excepted), we'll automatically be wrong about Lyles. Granted, Hayward did have TWO whole years of experience. And he did SLUMP to 29% on his 3's the second year. Still he averaged 57%/37%. I know, easier competition.

Lyles played at the toughest school, under the toughest circumstances. With no other talented players, he must have been doubled all the time. That's why his percentages are so low.

The Jazz didn't have a major need.
He didn't say they did.

He said that the jazz recognized they needed a legit 3rd big (I agree that is what they needed, don't think lyles fills that need).

Didn't say it was a major need

I'd say finding a backup for Rud is still a pretty big hole for this team. That, and shooting. Pretty much it IMO.
This.
I was hoping for Frank or myles because right now we still don't have a real center coming off the bench

Really though how many here wanted the Jazz to draft Boozer over Borchert (me included) and were pissed as all get out they didn't draft Boozer, so this same player your knocking is the same play almost everybody wanted the Jazz to draft in the first round.
Not me. Boozer fell because he was undersized for a PF. And we had a huge hole at the 5 with an aging, but still very, very good PF in Malone. Borchardt was a big risk, but he was the only way Utah could have ever made another run at a championship (if he recovered from his injuries).

Lyles chill as ****.
That's cool. Seems like a good dude who won't cause any problems and will listen his coach and teammates

So far my biggest concern about this is why PKM hasn't posted all about him.

But then maybe he's now posting on the PHX board.

The Jazz are very judicious and well prepared for drafts. They had their choice of Devin Booker, Kelly Oubre and Trey Lyles at 12. We couldn't really expect more than that. At least they didn't take Dekker.

I really hope the Jazz FO knows what they are doing here. I think this is going to come back to bite us in the ***.
