Exum Injured

Hopefully we can grab an up and coming PG from a team that already has a starting PG (i.e., Schröder from Atlanta).

If not he needs to take a gamble in the next couple of drafts and try to pick out a Tony Parker type pick for us.
If he waits a few drafts to pick this guy up it is very likely we will have already lost Hayward and maybe some others before it happens. The time to win is now. A ton was riding on Exum's development, and now we may have to wait a year to see that. Plus there is a high risk that this injury permanently hurts his ability to improve his greatest weakness (offensive aggression).

Hopefully somehow this injury is similar to Carroll's.

This post makes a ton of sense to people who don't believe in Exum's development, and unfortunately for those of us who do, if this injury is as significant as it appears to be the brakes have just been put on that dream.

I've always seen Exum as a multi-year project. It has never bothered me that he was not a finished product in his first year.
I agree 100%
My post was in response to those that are saying we won't be able to make the playoffs now that Exum is hurt and that next season will now suck.

I think everyone is upset that he is hurt and we all wish he were playing this season.

So is that a yes to the surgery? How long ago was it and what type of graft did you have?

Yeah it was surgery. I had a full tear that was attached with some sort of hollow thick bolt like screw. I have the VHS tape if you want to come over and watch some time!

I agree and this is why I think DL should cash in some of his assets now and get an up and coming PG this year to try and make the playoffs and see how far they can go (if Exum is out for the year).

I just don't think Hayward, Favors, Gobert, etc, should be penalised this year for the injury. They should have a team good enough to compete, especially Favors and Hayward who are in their prime. Hayward only has 2 years left on his contract plus a player's option, so unless we make the playoffs soon he might be looking elsewhere after that.

Seriously though. Schroeder fits the team age, identity (defense), is a willing passer,, and can push the pace. It's not a bad idea, and in Quin's system, having another good PG paired with a healthy Dante (if he has to sit out this season) wouldn't be too crazy.

Unfortunately, I don't see it happening. It would be too big of a pill to swallow for DL and crew, since Schroeder was available at #14, Gobert was available at #21, and Neto at #47 (our original picks before we burnt picks and cash) in the 2013 draft. It would be the loudest actuon admitting Burke was a bad pick.
Hopefully they have the ability to admit that they don't have a crystal ball. I think they do.

Not sure what the procedure was at the time, but now you wouldn't find a doctor who would clear you before 6 months.

Well, I think you rotate Burke, Neto and Cotton to let them all develop. Seems like they're all really back-ups though. Not sure any of them can shoot.

Give Exum the full year to recover and keep working on his body.

The question is whether the Jazz will lock in a long-term starter at PG. That's the decision that needs to be made. Exum goes from someone you rely on to someone you keep to see if he'll pan out, but this might set him back 18 months in terms of development and confidence. Damn if this wasn't a critical year for him.

..... and like clockwork, here's the Jazz unofficial spokesman trying to lower our expectation for the coming season.

Yeah probably true. It really didn't seem like that big of a deal when I tore it.
I remember my therapist said the best thing is to get it lose before it heals tight and you'll recover a lot faster.
Maybe now they let it heal then try to get flexibility back? It always makes me wonder why it takes people so long to recover.

Off the top of my head, NBA players with ACL injuries and how I would rate their recovery.

Rubio: 90%, got back to his first year stats but didn't improve much so may have had some effect.
Rondo: 70%, FG% and steal rate plummeted after injury
Rose: 60%, just not the same dominant player. But it might his other meniscus injury also hurting him.
Big Al: 95%, no surprise here, very methodical game not based on athleticism
Shumpert: 95%, seems like a full recovery, surprising given he relies on athleticism alot.

Overall, just kind of random. Every player is different. We'll see how Jabari Parker looks as he tries to come back from one.

If it was a full tear did they use part of your meniscus, hamstring or cadaver part to replace it with?

ACL surgery have changed quite a bit. They used to not want you to walk for the first 1-2 weeks until the swelling came down. But the old process never healed quite right and never got anyone back to 100%. They now have you doing physical therapy the next day and trying walking a week after. I had an ACL and MCL replaced with my hamstring. I was able to walk after 2 days and finished physical therapy after 1 month. The phycical therapist was shocked how fast I recovered but it was 6 months until I could run in more that a straight line and a good 1 year until it felt back to about 90% which I dont think it ever got better than that. I did play bball with Archie and Safetydan 6 months after my ACL but I was slow and couldnt cut or jump well.

Cadaver. It was apparently the best way for it.

I think the Jazz will give solid minutes to Neto. He's probably the best passer and not a terrible defensive liability. He'll be our version of Ricky Rubio. Alec Burks and Hoody can make up the offense.

The season(purely basketball-wise and results-wise) we are losing Exum for is not the biggest problem with that injury. We will do OK either way. The much bigger problem is we lose a year of Dante's development, a year of evaluation and quite possibly it might effect his willingness to be aggressive in the future.
Well said.

So has there been anything official released about this? Diagnosis or prognosis or some other nosis?

Would you add flexibility and explosiveness to that list as well? I don't think Rubio was ever the same after the injury/surgery...

Haven't researched that yet. From the little I've read purely physically in most cases there is no reason the athlete cannot be back to 100%(with some exceptions). The bigger problem seems psychological - making the player trust his knee again.
