What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

Alright, let's back into the swing of things...

I think maybe someone had mentioned this film already in this thread but if not, I saw...

Animal Kingdom (2010)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNszOl14AWg

Solid film with some great acting and good solid writing. Looks as though you can rarely go wrong with watching something from Guy Pearce's filmography. I also like Ben Mendelsohn a lot but I can't think of what else I've seen him in. Definitely recommended.

96% on RT.

Mendelsohn is great. He was amazing in Bloodline and has also been in The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond the Pines, and Killing Them Softly.

I continued with my watching of the Criterion Collection and decided for #625:

Eating Raoul (1982)

I picked this film not just for it's absurdist reputation but because Mary Woronov was in it. I'm kind of fan of hers and I dig some of her non-film work (https://www.maryworonov.com/).

At 84% on RT, this movie was a fun watch and even better while high. The opening of the movie is about as perfect a commentary on Los Angeles as there ever was.

I know for sure this movie was talked about before, but I finally got around to seeing:

Tree Of Life (2011)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXRYA1dxP_0

Absolutely blown away. Admittedly, I watched it in two sittings but the brilliance of the movie was not lost. I completely regret that I did not see it when it was in the theatre and if it was shown in 70mm, well, that would have been even more of an experience. While the movie did have some issues with it, like the dinosaur scene, which I thought went on for a little too long, I came away with a sense of awe because the perfect nature of so many of the scenes. I felt the same kind of creative sense of frustration after seeing Ida. To have the eye that Mr. Malick has...well, let's just say he IS an American treasure. Prolific.

I watched Her on HBO the other day. It was a lot better than it sounded in the channel guide. Good movie

Love Malick's eye. Hate his overused narration. Show me, don't tell me.

Add to the aforementioned...

The Tillman Story (2010)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlqRa49aTyw

A great documentary on the forced fog of war. It's another reason to hate the Bush admin and it was good to see the Tillman family rally around their lost son.

Last but definitely not least after much "prodding" from a co-worker...

Friedkin's Cruising (1980)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bn31G2SHkVE

My co-worker and I started talking about this movie after we both finished reading Friedkin's memoir The Friedkin Connection which was surprisingly a brisk read and really entertaining.

Cruising is a mind ****. Literally. It's one of those movies that needs to be watched more than once in order to get it's full effect and to even notice some of the purposefully confusing technical and editorial decisions. If you were of age when the movie came out, you'll remember that it had quite a negative backlash to it especially from the gay community. I didn't have that negative reaction in 2015 but I can see why it would have been panned back then.

It also had a great soundtrack with The Germs getting a lot of play.

The film is definitely not for the faint of heart or some of the puritan religious folk here on the board.

50% on RT but I would have gone much higher.

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (90% RT)

If you are a fan of Japanese animation this is a lovely documentary about Hayao Miyazagi one of the most prolific animator in Japanese history, the guy behind the fantastic Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle, etc, etc, working on his Final film before retiring.

It is also on Netflix so go catch it before it's gone!!!

Oh! Almost forgot.

I also got to see for the first time...

The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v6-T52zLO0

Horrific trailer.

Absolutely loved it. Wes Anderson and his vision translated perfectly to this medium. I have to find out if my nieces watched it because the movie rocks!

92% on RT.

My Bodyguard. I hadn't seen this since I was five years old, in the theater. And I didn't remember much. Solid oldie but goodie.

The only good Wes Anderson movie.

I saw Everest.
It was pretty awesome

I enjoyed it.

Song of the Sea

Wonderfully done. Go watch it. With or without your kids.

And, wow, Big Hero 6, which I liked, won the Oscar over both The Tale of Princess Kaguya and Song of the Sea. I can't decide which one is better.
