^Jazz4Ever said, "The Jazz lucked into Gobert, nothing more, nothing less." I disagree with that statement 100%, even though I understand Siro's point.
Sure, but Jazz4ever was responding to the idea that "Oh no, Gobert would have been drafted anyway since DL loved him so much". That's a silly thing to say considering he didn't even love him enough to draft him with the 21st pick, choosing instead to bundle it with the 14th to get Burke. Nobody is suggesting that he got lucky and drew Gobert's name out of a hat, but he got lucky to find a seller before anyone else drafted Gobert. It's not like he was unheard of. Most mock drafts projected him in the 25-30 range.
I would fully expect that he had lined up the option to buy the pick before he bundled and moved up. I can't imagine him being so linear in thinking that he could not look coordinate and plan out several options in advance.
Truth.Obviously, they liked Gobert. Had they known he was this good they would not have traded picks and picked Gobert at the earliest opportunity. I believe that Scotty Layden said, when someone congratulated the Jazz for getting Stockton at the pick they did in the draft at some point late in his career, "No, we weren't good. Had we evaluated him correctly, we would have traded up to get him and not left things to chance."
Obviously had any team known how good Gobert and Giannis were going to be, they would have gone #1 and #2 in that draft.Obviously, they liked Gobert. Had they known he was this good they would not have traded picks and picked Gobert at the earliest opportunity.

Siro and Jazz4ever can say we "lucked into" many of our picks. If Exum turns out to be a top-15 PG, we "lucked" into him because Orlando took AG. We lucked into Hayward because Udoh and Aminu went before him. We lucked into Rodney Hood.
As to Gobert, DL said weeks before the draft that teams were "sleeping on" an international player. I remember because that's when I started to do some research and realized that player was Gobert. Rudy was a raw player and Utah had their starters in Favors and Kanter. But KOC/DL had left Utah with no PG's. So when the opportunity came to trade up for a highly-regarded one, it was a no-brainer. Yes, there was some luck that Rudy lasted until #27. But also credit hard work by DL for finding out Dallas wanted to trade out.
You're not getting it. We lucked into finding a pick in the late first round after having traded away our own. It has nothing to do with lucking out on his level of talent. Unless DL already had something in the works with Denver before trading 21+14.
Keep em coming holmesFrance up by 1 at halftime. Rudy with a few good plays, but really cant stop Gasol in the paint.
