What's new

Anybody see the southpark season premiere?

Just saw the last one. I had no idea about this whole political correctness bs and the transgender athlete.

Both are absolutely lame and irrelevant topics and I have no idea why they bother people to go argue aboot it but I'm glad SP is back.

I thought it was funny. I'm one of those who, although I do think it took courage for Jenner to come out like she did so publicly, I don't consider her a hero, nor someone, solely by virtue of her transsexuality, who merits our admiration. I read stories about how she pretty much ignored her children while they were young and other things, and I've reached a (tentative) conclusion that she's a bit of a narcissist arsehole.

Political correctness, BTW, is not a new thing. The phrase and social commentary/critique of it has been around since at least the mid-1980s. I'm not sure where the line is crossed from legit concern about social sensibilities to political correctness, but it's clear that the line is crossed with some frequency. As a general comment, in my view, no one and nothing is or should be immune from criticism, satire, ridicule, etc.

You see, implied by this post is the following:

Police officers, military=courageous brave
transgender=cowards

Those are as equally false.

Personally, I reject the notion that we should view police officers or members of the military as heroes, and I'm tired of cultural pressure to do that. E.g., every frig'n Jazz game we are 'invited' to stand up and cheer whatever military person they choose to highlight that game. Can we please just stop that already? Many people in the military are honorable, some are heroes, but many are arseholes and many more are not heroes. Just serving doesn't make one a hero nor necessarily even laudable.

I find such 'hero worship' of the military and police forces, and the social pressure to conform to such worship (such as at Jazz games) every bit as annoying an example of political correctness as any suggestion that we must view Caitlyn Jenner as a hero.

That's a mighty big leap in logic to go from my post to the conclusion that I hero worship a basketball team. I'd be curious if you could explain the reasoning process of how you got to that conclusion.

As for the second part of your reply, there appears to be a typo so I don't understand it.

LOL@ trying to reason with Dutch. Jimmy is in the "One Brow" category of posters who have infinite patience and tolerance.

South Park became boring a decade ago. Youre on a similar path.

Disagree, they have gotten much better the last decade. Original stuff was boring and just tried to be loud and offensive. The new stuff is really well written. Every season has hits or misses though nothing has changed in that regard.

I agree with this. Allot of people are only even in the military because they couldn't get into/afford a good college and they had no better options and knew that the military would house and feed them for a few years and they would receive money when they get out.
Very few join the military because they want to "fight the good fight" or do anything heroic.

Also, jenner is no hero

Unless you do 20 years the military doesn't give you any money when you get out. But if you do 20 years you get 50% of your base salary from an average of your three highest paid years of service for the rest of your life, which is a pretty awesome deal.

One of my best friends, and roommate for many many years, was in the marines and was honorably discharged after a very short time (Maybe three years, or less) and he received lots of money from the military for school (he went to itt tech)
He didn't even use the money for school, it mostly went to drugs, alcohol, and partying in general. It was lots of fun

Ahh, school money. Yeah.

They made it even better after I got out (which still applies to me) where they pay for your school and give you housing allowance as if you were active duty. They also started paying up to full tuition for the highest priced state school in the state where you live. It's a good deal.

But I agree with JEJ that just joining the military doesn't mean you're honorable or courageous. I'd say honorable and courageous people are the minority of people in the military. Lot's of scum bags and petty tyrants, tbh.
