It could end up mattering if the utes have one loss though right?

There could be a scenario where there are multiple one loss teams and not all of them can get into the playoffs. In that case, how good your opponents do might factor in.
 
USC is quickly spiraling downward, came into the season as most peoples Pac 12 champion to represent in the College Playoff. Now their coach has taken a leave, not good...I love that these big colleges think they're entitled to success such as Texas and USC (not Charlie Strong I think he knows what it's gonna take) and they're not willing to put in the rough years to build something long term. The days of recruits going to big name colleges just because of their history is long gone and I think it's great for everyone.
 
If the Utes (or any Pac-12 team) have only one loss, as long as that loss isn't in the Pac 12 championship game, they are in.

Not if we win the Pac 12 championship. If we don't Utah won't be considered for the playoff anyway. Srsly no one is going to care what Oregon has done if we beat Stanford or Cal in the Pac12 title game. There won't be 4 teams with better resume's than a 1 loss Pac12 Champ. It's not possible given the schedules out there. A 1 loss Pac12 champ would have 10 P5 wins including multiple ranked teams and a title game.

I disagree.
If the pac looks weak...... Like a bunch of mediocre teams. Usc not looking good now. Oregon not looking good now. Byu almost beat ucla at home. If it keeps going that way then there is no guarantee that the pac12 championship winner gets in.
It could end up as ohio state, michigan, Lsu, and baylor or tcu.

Or maybe baylor and tcu both get in. Or maybe two sec schools get in.

There are no guarantees.
It would be best for utah if all the top pac teams (usc, ucla, oregon before their latest embarrassment) beat the lower teams.
That usc loss and the Oregon loss can only hurt the utes.

Now I think it likely that the winner of the pac12 gets in the playoff but it's no guarantee.

A 1 loss Pac 12 champ 100% makes it to the playoff. Every single year. No matter what.

A 2 loss Pac 12 champ makes it to the playoff most years.

^^^This. The examples with TCU and Baylor each miraculously making the playoff with one of them having a loss since they play each other and no conference championship is not happening. Michigan and Ohio State have to play each other and the loser of that game is not going to the BIG10 Conference Championship Game. So I highly doubt the loser of that game is going to the CFP. The ACC being the weakest of the P5 in most opinions at the moment needs an undefeated team to be able to go to the CFP. That leaves Clemson and FSU at the moment. Again, those teams have to play each other. If Florida State wins that game, then they have to go to Gainesville to play Florida.... How good is Florida? I guess we'll see. It's very possible the ACC doesn't have a team this season in the playoff at all. Point being, a 1 loss PAC12 Champion gets into the CFP.

These aren't the MWC days...but it is USC. It may come down to this season and how the recruiting trail looks. Can he build the next powerhouse in Utah ala Chip Kelley in Oregon? If he stays he will definitely have more power from here on out. Hopefully, he stays and convinces Hill to expand RE to 50k.
 
A two or three loss Utah team that plays in a New Years Six or later bowl game would be bad news. He'd be a perfect candidate to be scooped up by a major program.

But a playoff appearance, would maybe make him want to stay. Especially if a raise and RE expansion is on the table.
