Official UofU homer thread

How much of that was a result of playing from behind? It changes the dynamic a lot when you have to score quickly.

Wilson had almost 20 passes in the first half. That is unacceptable. Booker should have had 15 carries and halftime, Wilson should have had 5 carries, and Williams should have had 3-5 carries. 10-15 passes max. If that happens, its a different game.

This game is on the OC.

yep.

Wilson deserves blame for not running it himself when nothing was available other than that it's on Utah coaching and USC playing a good game.

This. There was a third and three play, where Wilson threw a pick. When he lined up, USC had three down linemen and their LB'ers were 7 yards deep. They showed no blitz, and as soon as the ball was snapped everyone dropped into coverage. Wilson could have easily run for 10-15 yards. Instead he tries to force the ball and throws a pick.

If he would have seen the downlineman, dropped, then ran, we have a first down instead of TO.

Just dumb plays. Utah is a running team. Even on pass plays you should run. Run, run, run. Then run some more.

The good news is, this changes nothing. What I wrote before the season:

Utah vs USC. I want Utah to win this game so badly. Desperately. BUT, coming off the Oregon and ASU wins, Utah faces a USC team with two losses and isn't quite there mentally. Wilson has a early TO and Booker has a late fumble that gives the game away. Utah's offense struggles again, and people stupidly start talking about KT...morons. 31-24 Utah 6-1 (3-1).

Not too bad. Lol. Pretty spot on...other than the fact that USC has three losses and they scored a lot more...

On to next week. This loss changes nothing for us. The goals are:

Become Bowl eligible. Check. So, we move on to goal #2/4:

Win the South.

We still have a 1 game lead in the south. Time to go to work vs OSU. What I wrote before the season:

Utah vs OSU. I feel bad for Gary this year. OSU is broken by the time they face Utah, coming into the game with a 2-5 record. Utah is looking for blood after their loss and drop from #7 to #17 in the polls. Gary makes a deal with Whitt at halftime to become the future coach of Utah, and Chase Hansen gives a show in the late third and fourth quarter. 38-3 Utah 7-1 (4-1).

We fell 10 spots in the poll and OSU has a 2-5 record, just as I predicted. I just didn't see us getting the respect initially and getting all the way to #3. Time to start climbing the polls again. This loss will help us a lot in the long run. It exposed some weaknesses. It showed some of our lack of depth.

We are now onto our third string TE, and it showed with some drops. Our LB depth showed...or lack of it. Why was Allen playing so much? What happened to Reginald? Good to see Williams out there at safety. He has been vastly under appreciated. We need him big time.

The good news is, our schedule lets up big time. In the past, we've had a tough loss to a great USC team, then we have a ranked ASU, followed by a ranked Arizona, followed by a ranked UCLA.

Now we have a chance to win our next three games against teams that CAN beat us (see WSU last year) but have HUGE holes in their games. We should roll the next three weeks. Time to go out and do the work.

Go Utes!

This loss changed nothing.

Sure it did. You were in the playoffs as of Friday, you're not anymore. A bunch of things would've to happen along with you winning out to even get back in the conversation. A very high likelihood the Pac gets shut out of the playoff. And now UCLA is in the same position as you. Win out, they win the South. Whereas that was only available to you guys as of Friday.

Reality:

Utah is all alone at the top of the south division.

Utah's schedule is much easier from here on out than it was before.

Utah still has a great defense and will play a lot of suspect defenses going forward.

Utah controls their own destiny.

This loss changed nothing.
Your first four statements are definitely true. Your fifth one, not so much.

I've never thought we were good enough to make the CFP and my biggest hope for the season has always been to win the South, but if we win out we are in the CFP. I'll bet anyone $100.

I don't think we win out, but I'm very confident that a 1 loss PAC 12 champ makes the CFP every single year. Same can be said of a one loss SEC and Big Ten champ.

My guess is we lose 1 or 2 more times.

Man, I love Travis' heart and toughness, but I'm not gonna miss him next year. You can nitpick the loss all you want, but here's the bottom line: Utah up 14-7 and driving for more, and TW throws an INT that set up USC inside our 10. Game over. If Utah goes up 21-7 or even 17-7 at that point, they leave SoCal with a win. After that, TW gets rattled (as he always seems to do after his first INT), Utah starts pressing, you know the rest.

Bottom line: Any hopes of this team finishing with 1 loss hinges on Travis not being a dumbass. I feel like the rest of the team is 1 loss worthy, Travis is a wildcard and a completely different story. We'll see how it all plays out, but I eagerly await the beginning of the Troy Williams era. He's got the tools to be Boykin-like.

I get what you are saying and I don't disagree.

BUT, the coaches should be smarter and not call the pass play to begin with. They were trying to be too cute. I blame the play caller. We don't have Peyton Manning back there. We have some 21 year old. Our coaches messed up.

That being said, next spring we will have two 4 star kids fighting for the job. And that doesn't include Brandon Cox. Should be good.

And I do have faith in ARod. Since he's been the QB coach, we've won 9 games last year and 6 so far this year.

Our QB play has been a lot better with him over the QB's.

A RB like Booker is wasted if you can't throw the ball enough to keep defenses honest. We could argue the merits of running the ball on that very play, but overall, you're not going to be a very good football team if you can't throw the ball 25-30 times per game without fear of turning the ball or 3 or 4 times.

I get it, we attempted something like 20 passes in the first half. Too many. But if TW looks at the LB standing right in front of the Wr or pulls it down and runs, we're having an entire different conversation. It wasn't the play call that was flawed. It was our Frankenstein QB making throws that a true freshman in his first start might make.

I wonder who the last QB is to get picked off by the same LB three times in a game. Has it ever happened?

^ the usc lb made good reads, but you are right they were around the same area, with wilson staring down the receiver those were predictable passes. The passing game is still unreliable and has been all season, we've just been able to get away with it up until this point thanks to strong defensive play and wilson not making dumb throws. guess it was inevitable at some point wilson's poor decision he's shown through the years would show up. think it's the coordinator's job to recognize when your qb is out of sorts, we should have ran the ball a helluva lot more against usc in the 1st half. we put it on wilson to make the play and it cost us.

Dropped to 13 & 14 in the polls which sounds about right. still every week utah will have to grind games out because that's what we do. We should still be favorite to win the south but at this point gotta figure Stanford is the favorite to win the pac-12 championship, their offense looks way better than it was last year. our offense still has issues.

Glad someone else noticed it so I wasn't just imagining it, I saw the "highlights" Sunday night and thought I saw it again basically every pass was to the side hash marks around 4'ish yards deep, again it's Wilson's fault for throwing it but I also still think that is bad play design/call. Again if I'm not mistaken it was more of a max protect in that the TE or RB stayed in to block however the routes ran are all short no one deep to make the LB move, on one of the INT's I think both the RB and TE stayed into block (the one that was thrown towards Covey) if I had to guess it was the 1st or maybe 2nd one the 3rd one was to the TE on the opposite hash mark as the other two INT's.

If personnel is keeping them from being more diverse in play calling then they just aren't as good as we hoped but I still believe they can run the table or lose 1 more game which again is still a good season and while it wouldn't be as good as it could have been it still will be a good season that I'd be proud and happy with.

I will save my worries about next season until the off season, with a lot of senior leadership graduating/moving to the NFL, next season will be a bigger indication of how far the program has come.

Let me just say this...

6-1.

Six wins, one loss.

That's AWESOME.

I had the team at 4-3 at this point of the season.

While it's a bummer we lost to USC, they deserved the win and we deserved the loss. And we still have so much to play for.

Life is good. Can't wait for Saturday night's game - and not only because it means I don't have to stay at home and put up with trick or treaters.

4-3? Really?

I actually feel bad for Gary Andersen this weekend. They are going to face a mad Utah team looking to beat someone up. OSU is just too young and small. It will be an ugly game for OSU.

Yep

I had utah going 9-3 before the season began. Still have hope
