What's new

the situation in Egypt

Dutch,

The reality is that all countries are two-faced. History shows how most everyone including the US looks out for themselves. It is the major reason why there is conflict in the world. If you do not want to believe that Obama has supported the people of Eygpt without meddling too much than fine but I heard the speech he gave and I agree with Obama's position. Perhaps it is better than the alternative which is what we did in Iraq. Hopefully, our government has learned that the US just can't go around and bomb people into submission so they act the way we want them to act. Unfortunately there are many voices in American who still believe that "bombing" or overthrowing govts is the best way to get what you want. Freedom is the right of all people any not just the responsibility of the US. It is the right of the Eygptians to determine the way they want to run their country and no one else. I find it inspiring that common people feel so strongly about the issue that they are willing to protest and even die. Hopefully, things will turn out ok and that this is just the beginning of good things.

Of course the US (Obama) have too trend lightly because US have been friends with a dictator for years, so they have left themselves in a tough position. That is the argument that happens when you allow your self-interest to trump your principles which unfortunately most countries do. The frustrating thing is that most people, regardless of the country, don't want to honestly look at the behavior of their own country because if there country is bad then it makes them feel bad. I know this is a huge generalization but extreme nationalism leads to many of the problems that have occurred through the history of mankind. So Dutch my point is that I agree with you. The US looks two-faced and some ways they are being two faced because of their relationship with a dictator and their past claims of supporting democratic reform throughout the world. I still rather the US handle these situations like Egypt instead of the way they handle Iraq. Would you agree?

Egyptian "revolutionaries", raping and beating an American journalist in Tahrir Square. After all, its just a woman. Prophet Muhammad would had approved this act.

This situation is slowly spiraling out of control. I see now that many service workers are striking for better wages; ambulance drivers, paramedics, airport employees, textile workers, etc. They've been ordered by the military to get back to work but I suspect we'll see many more segments of Egyptian society come under the same types of protests. It's like everyone thought that as soon as Mubarak left office it would be all wine and roses.

I have to be honest, that made me chuckle. And since I did and Im in a great mood, Ive given you pos rep. Also, "tool?" Really, man? Why do you hate me so much now. Kind of hurts.

I'm sure your seven hurts more than his six. In fact, I think I hate you for this too. Having sevens around makes fives look terrible, and fours pitifully funny. Twos, ones, and zero's get a pass as they're obviously immature and haven't gone through growing pains yet. But 3's? There is something seriously delinquent about a 3. If I had a 3 I would put serious consideration into buy up to at least a 5 on the verge of six. I hear David Stern has some space to sell. Maybe others around could be paid as well to perform such a modification.

I mean, I can hardly wander around here without wondering what everyone thinks of my five. Can't I just cover it up? This is getting out of hand. I hate your 7, Moose.

Before CBS goes on lauding the "Revolution" as the Hope of Islam, a few points. In some quarters, women without their burkhas are taken as public resources. Europe is already recognizing that their multiculturalism has failed to evoke a reciprocal response from the full world community, and are desperately re-thinking the whole global agenda looking for a way to survive. Just survive.

The Egyptian military is a major commercial operation with a lot of productive "private sector" operations, easily the major "corporate" or "private" employer in the land. And the people who work for these operations are a majority of the people who actually have jobs. . . .This is about as transparently fascist as it gets. . . . . and probably there will not be a great Open Door for new commercial investments. . . . so there will still be a very large unemployed mass who will have to accept the open fascism/two-class system. . . .

US democrats, ya call this "progress"???? republicans, ya gonna hang your hat on the notion that this is the best of all possible worlds?????

Have those that thought the Tunisian and Egyptian protests were just a passing affair with no substance behind them changed their mind as a result of the ensuing protests in Iran, Algeria, Morocco, and now China?

As I think most of us that were in support of the protests thought, it was a step in the right direction. Its proving to be true.

Gameface,

Did your father at least slit the eyelids open like when Rocky gets his *** kicked by Apollo Creed?

I don't know, I was much too young to remember anything like that happening.

Like I've been sayin for a while, be careful for what you wish for... There's no guarantee at all that after Mubarak that Egypt will be any better for its own people... Or the US/Israel...

Of course there is no guarantee. Life is full of risk. But I support their right of self determination.

I think it takes a decade or more to really know what direction it's taking - - and that most likely will include a few stumbles along the way.

but like viny, I applaud their courage and hope these are steps towards peace in the region.

I don't get why anyone is applauding these people who treat women like shiat. The only reason their riots even matter is because they control the Suez.

Ann is right on the money with this one, as usual:
The Middle East is on fire again, and crazy Muslims with funny names aren't helping things -- Mahmoud, ElBaradei, al-Banna, Barack ...

The major new development is that NOW liberals want to get rid of a dictator in the Middle East! Where were they when we were taking out the guy with the rape rooms?

Remember? The one who had gassed his own people, invaded his neighbors and was desperately seeking weapons of mass destruction? The guy who emerged from a spider hole looking like Charlie Sheen after a three-day bender?

Liberals couldn't have been less interested in removing Saddam Hussein and building a democracy in Iraq. So it's really adorable seeing them get all choked up about democracy now. Say, as long as liberals are all gung-ho about getting rid of out-of-touch, overbearing dictators, how about we start with Janet Napolitano?
