Jazz Defensive rankings

I think I saw Cy state in a different thread that Hayward has taken the next step defensively. Can others confirm? I only saw the game against Detroit.

Exum wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire. The Jazz clearly got better when Rudy began starting. I don't know why you wouldn't think they would still be good.

It was more about him not being a rookie and the fact that he isn't trey Burke. I didn't think they would take a step back, but I was worried they would have about as good a record as last year. I was hoping for like 48-50 wins before the Exum injury, now I think they still might get to 45.

I haven't seen enough to confirm. It would be pretty amazing if he has. We would be an insane defensive team, especially when Exum comes back.

I think Gordon took that step last season. Just watch the last several minutes of the Cleveland game when he stopped LBJ multiple times.

Not too worried about Hayward. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with his pre-season injury.

I love our defense. LOVE. I really want to see us get to 5-1 and travel to Cleveland to see just how good we can be. Also, just keep in mind these two wins have been against two teams who may be the worst in the entire league along with L.A.

I don't understand why people are trying to dismiss Hayward.

I don't think very many people are.
I think most are just discussing his early season struggles so far

These stats are because we played against two of the worst teams in the league. And we lost to Detroit too. While Detroit is 3-0, I don't see them as being one of the best teams but more of a middling team. So can't put too much weight on how good we are yet.

If we can keep this up against teams that are decent, then we can start talking.

Kind of. The fact that we blew them out on the road means something, though.

Pretty damn good!!!

Meaningless since they take 25 seconds to jack up long two's every possession. Rest look interesting thus far.

It's not meaningless. Their 2-1 record and 19-10 to close last season prove that.

Also jazz are 6th in points in the paint per game at 46.7 per game this season.

Prognosis: False.

What he is saying is that they need to have a better offense. Opponent ppg can only tell you a little about how good a team is, and is not necessarily a reliable indicator of good defense.

I understood what he was trying to say. But what he said was a very bad way of saying it. Jazz have a healthy points in the paint game. Yes the Jazz need dramatic work on O.

As for opp ppg. Perhaps you're right which is why my OP has another 10 or so ranking most of which Jazz are top 10 and a half dozen top 5.

The Jazz bad O does mitigate their amazing D somewhat. But it's far from making it meaningless.

Not really. They're trash outside of Derrick's improved performances. It's pretty non-existent outside him.

I agree PPG is useless without using pace or number of possesions. The best indicator is Defensive Rating (Defensive Efficiency as you have it). Jazz give up 87.1 points per 100 possessions which is absolutely insane considering the best Defensive Rating last season was the Warriors at 101.4. But also the 76ers offense last season was one of the worst of all time and they don't look much better even with Okafor. It definitely will be interesting to see if the Jazz can get a defensive rating under 100. Hasn't been done since those great defensive teams in Indy from 2012-2014

It is impossible to play the relentless defense that the Jazz do and also have a top 5 offense. I know that Golden State supposedly has a great D and a stellar O, but when the Jazz are clicking on Defense, nothing like that has been played since the 90's and those blokes had different rules. The way you compliment suffocating defense is to run a bruising screen game with physical picks, which allows players to rest a bit on offense and demoralize the other team further. No other team wants to play that game with the Jazz other than maybe Memphis. Part of Golden State's success is that, like the Suns of old, they bait you into a run and shoot game and bad shots early in the clock. If you refuse to play that game with them, you have a better chance of success (Jazz and Grizzlies seemed to play GS tough.)
