Pretty damn good!!!

Well for example, the Warriors had the best defense rating in the league last year but were 15th in opponent PPG. Solely using PPG doesn't get you anything.

Good thing it was never only Op PPG listed.

I really wanted to find a link to defensive efficiency for individual players. Anyone have a link?

I think that if the jazz opponents averaged 79 ppg over an 82 game season that we would have the best record in the league and probably the best record of all time. We would probably almost go undefeated.

Agreed and that's exactly my point why it's meaningless. Using PPG in a vacuum without accounting for pace, Defense Rating, adjusted for opponent, etc can't give the best understanding of the quality of defense. It's a moot point, we both think the Jazz defense is great. Use PPG alone if you want.

lol, 82-0 Utah Jazz NBA champs!!! I like the sound of that.

Obviously the Opp PPG will come back down to earth when we start playing teams like the Warriors and Thunder.

I think you can use ppg in a vacuum if that ppg is 79.
I need no other info than ppg in that case to know that the jazz have the best defense in the league and a historically good defense.

When I see ppg at 79 then I already know without looking that our opponents are shooting poor percentages, turning the ball allot, and doing poorly in every offensive category that there is. I also already know that the jazz are doing well at every defensive category possible. I don't need any stat other than 79 ppg to tell me these things because 79 ppg is SO good of a number.

Now if the jazz were leading the nba in opponent ppg @ 93 or something then I would need to look further to see things like pace and points per possesion and field goal percentage.

79 ppg is SO low that you know it's special defense without any other indicators because of the shot clock. The existence of the shot clock means there is only so much that you can limit possessions and slow the pace.

Pre shot clock 79 points per game would not mean much without other stats though

You would definitely need pace along with PPG to know if they are the best defensive team in the NBA.

I disagree when that number is 79. Best ever since the shot clock, guaranteed.

Someone look up the team with the slowest pace for a season ever since the shot clock was introduced.
Then also find the team with the worst season average shooting percentage ever since the shot clock.

I bet even if you combined those two historically bad teams offenses, they still average over 79 points per game.

Maybe less intelligent people see 79 points per game allowed by a team and think "hmmm, I wonder if that is good or not. I better look up some more stats to find out."

I can see 79 points per game and already know that is good defense with nothing else

Obviously the Opp PPG will come back down to earth when we start playing teams like the Warriors and Thunder.

Both of those teams' offenses are terrifying. The Thunder passed through the Nuggets last night like a buzzsaw, and the Warriors have looked even more impressive (if that's possible).

I don't expect the Jazz' D to hold off teams like that. Even if we do become entrenched in the playoff race this year, those teams are going to dismantle us because they have weapons and chemistry that cannot be stopped.

What will be interesting to see is how the Jazz respond in those games.

What if another team is at 83 and play a much faster pace?
Then that defense might be even better.

My point is that if a defense allows 79 points per game then I know it's an amazing defense without looking at anything else. Maybe there would be another team that has a better defense and we would have two of the top defensive teams in the history of the nba

I think most intelligent people would say the # is greatly skewed by playing the D-League 76'ers and 2 other teams without elite offensive players (who happened to be non-playoff Eastern Conference teams the previous year (though I think the Pistons are good)).

Agreed.
No way we can sustain 79 points per game.
If we did we would finish with the best record in the league

I agree 100 percent. I never once said we will keep this 79 points per game throughout the season. In fact I think it's impossible regardless of pace.

No, you literally said "I need no other info than ppg in that case to know that the jazz have the best defense in the league.....".

You need a lot of other info, like: who have they played and what pace do they play?

It's like saying BYU has the best defense in the country after they held Wanger to 6 points (if that was the 1st game they played). And being like "Damn they have only allowed 6 points all year, I need no other info: BYU is the best defense in the country" This may be the logic more or less of Utes/BYU fans about their teams, idk.

I expect the Jazz D to have some impact on the game but I agree that you are not going to truly stop those teams. Especially in a 7 game series.

I stand by my point.
79 points allowed per game tells me that so far this year the jazz have the best defense in the league after playing the schedule they were given.

That definitely could change. Allot of people have said that the jazz had the best defense in the league after the all star break though so it might continue to be the best in the league. The jazz have Gobert and favors anchoring the D. That's a good thing that bodes well for the jazz defense going forward in the season

I will say we probably have a top 5 defense again. I'm not going as far as saying BEST when we have only played 3 Eastern Conference teams who didnt even make the playoffs last year or any real offensive star. Sorry if I have reserved optimism.

Although we're allowing 79 ppg, we've already lost a game. Out of 3 played. So I don't know about fish's theory. :p

I'm with ya. I don't think these three games prove that the jazz will have the best defense when the season is all said and done
