150 Terrorists invade Oregon

Good discussion here. Until the last few posts I completely missed the equivalency between the inner city riot situation and this rancher situation. Maybe, just maybe, both sides of the political spectrum can pause for a moment and see the sense in what's going on at the other extreme, especially because they are both trying to address their problems in essentially the same way. I'm sure that most of the people in the middle would be extremely grateful for a little dose of sanity.

The article from the Atlantic goes into this exact subject. The more I read the Atlantic the more I like it. Usually some thought provoking articles in there.

I just started reading it. Good find. I'll have to return to finish it tonight. If nothing else, it's nice to hear these sorts of things discussed in a reasonable tone.

Jefferson was a dumbass

The Atlantic article was a real eye opener. Anybody actually having an opinion on this Oregon incident should read it. I know I learned a great deal. The embedded clip from Oliver's show was good as well.

I lived through the Civil Rights and Vietnam era, and honestly feel the divisiveness and polarization in the United States now is far worse. Maybe it's just the distance in time since then. Or maybe it really is worse. I know the cable news outlets ensure this polarization continues and worsens. Seems to me.

That was an excellent article!

Can someone give this thread a rating on how bad it is. 1 - Stoked please, 1 being worth reading and Stoked being completely ignore thread.

It was bad,at times, but it was absolutely salvaged, and then some, by the link Stoked posted.

My favorite president.
I was speaking about big al.... Or maybe dick Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson was before my time so I don't know allot about him and his intelligence

I just want to say that I thought the Atlantic article to be a very good read. I have long opposed mandatory minimum sentencing, and I oppose it regardless of who its victims are. (BTW, The Atlantic is a great magazine if one is looking for thoughtful discussions on important topics.)

I liked the line in the article,"No tribe that customarily extols civil disobedience should first condemn them without taking the time to investigate the accuracy of their claims about that misbehavior." So true.

The unfortunate irony here is that mandatory minimum sentencing, back in the days, was dog whistle fodder for the right to demonstrate just how tough on crime would -be politicians were. Once unleashed, however, it's a dog as apt to bite it's creator as anyone else.

I think this Ammon Bundy is a nut case, but he's no terrorist. He should probably have avoided the rhetoric about being prepared to kill or be killed, or whatever he said, and should probably have left the guns at home. He could have made his point just as well without this stuff, which only goes serves to delegitimize whatever complaint he may have, valid or no.

You confused Al Jefferson with Thomas Jefferson? No problem, I'm sure it happens all the time, and it makes perfect sense that your opinion of Al would cloud your understanding of Tom. ;-)

Could be that I'm the dumbass

Back to the thread at hand: how did Obama let 150 Muslim ISIL folks slip into Oregon? Will the Portland game be cancelled because of this?
