There are good cops

I think the conception in the world today is that most cops are bad. Unfortunately the the stories of bad cops are the ones usually told, and no one really cares about the stories of good cops, not news worthy.. I get it though.

This will take u to the article and video of a cop playing basketball with some kids. Some idiot calls the cops to complain about kids playing a harmless game of basketball in the street. To see the video click the second page.

Nice to read about good stories from time to time.

Right on for this cop. Good job.

I believe that the vast majority of cops in America are good people doing a hard job. But I also think that better policies, accountability, training...need to be implemented. I also think that the anti-cop daze needs to be reversed by society. Plenty of things play into the current climate on both sides.

Unfortunately margin for error is higher for an officer. We need to remember that they are people too. Even good cops make the wrong choices. Not condoning, just saying they are no different then u or I. I don't like seeing anti cop material. Meaning blame the one responsible not the entire force as being corrupt.

Shouldn't they be, though? Should such power as granted to police officers not require higher moral standard than is required of a retail salesperson or an accountant? Isn't it a given that they should NOT be people like you and me?

They ought to be much, much better people than you and me.

That's simply unrealistic. Perhaps better trained and equipped. But better people? That's purely subjective.

Also what's wrong with Thee Jazz Fan?

No disrespect, but with the minimum education required to be a cop, you can't expect too much. I'd rathet have morr qualified, educated people with the power they do, and I think they'd deserve to get paid better for having higher qualifications.

Let's put this in perspective. You don't think "regular" people should have the right to own firearms, correct? So you have a fantasy of some noble warrior class of citizen that we entrust to protect us from all forms of evil?

Let's not get hung up on this fantasy. I can tell you, as a former member of the military, it's not realistic to expect those we entrust with arms to be any better than than your average decent person on the street. We can shoot for not handing the keys to the armory to a psycho, but let's not get carried away thinking we are going to find a new breed of human for this role.

I doubt anyone here thinks all or most cops are bad. Just as, for example, most Catholic priests are not bad. But, when the system that exists places priority on protecting the institution, and thus the relatively small number of bad cops/priests, there is definitely something wrong with the system, and it needs to be reformed. Time and time again, police departments have prioritized protecting the institution over the well-being of citizens, transparency or accountability, and thus there is, in my view, little reason to trust/believe anything they say about issues that might reflect badly on the institution. I have, for example, no doubt that if that cop in S. Carolina (I believe it was there) had not been filmed shooting the unarmed, non-threatening man in the back, the institutional police there would have circled the wagon to protect him and we would never have known what actually happened.

It's not that I don't trust the ordinary police officer, I absolutely do not trust the institution of which he/she is a member.
