#OscarsSoWhite - Thoughts?

Various actors have come out and supported either side of this. What's your take on it?

I'm sorta with Michael Caine on this who said:

"You can't vote for an actor because he's black -- you can't just say, 'Oh I'm going to vote for him, he's not very good, but he's black.' You've got to give a good performance," he said.

"Be patient," was Caine's message to non-white actors, "Of course it will come. It took me years to get an Oscar."

What are your thoughts? Should there be a "quota" for African American actors receiving an award each year?

Stacey Dash also put it pretty well. Too lazy to post what she said, just google it.

I think they have a real point.

I think Hollywood is a pretty big bag of **** and they spoon that **** into our mouths because we continue to beg them to give us as much **** as they can possibly shovel.

I'm not sure I'm still on topic.

All of it, the awards, the controversy, everything, it's all a huge joke.

We're concerned about this ****, when people are starving out there. Good job America!

Of course it's a problem, but its not the Oscars fault. There just aren't many black roles in Hollywood, and especially Oscar bait movies, that aren't just typecast black roles.

I agree a bit with both Stoked and King Cy on the matter.

As with Stoked, I think part of the problem is having the academy made up of 97% white people (or whatever the exact percentage is) rather than being more representative of America.

As with King Cy, I think part of the problem is the quantity and quality of roles for black actors.

Is a boycott the solution? Well, it certainly got me thinking about something that I probably wouldn't have thought about otherwise. Probably many other people are similar. So I'd say it has served its purpose, at least in part.

Nope. BET awards, Image awards, etc..

Right, so because blacks have their own awards, it's ok for the academy to snub black actors/directors/etc. year after year?

A primary reason there are such things at BET awards is because blacks have been traditionally excluded from mainstream; if they had not, there would be little reason to have such things.

And I think if you sat down and talked with the black entertainers who support a boycott, the systematic exclusion of blacks from such key roles, or stories featuring black performers, etc. are part of the problem and a contributory cause to their lack of recognition at Oscar time. It's a systemic problem of which Oscar whitewashing is but a symptom.

Spoken by someone with an obviously deep understanding of what it's like to be Black.

As much as you do.

There's a huge list of blacks that have won at the oscars.

Two things:

the oscars? Really. When all the better crap to focus on with regards to racism this is your fight? (Your = Pinkett, Smith, lee...)

Oscar board needs to be more representative of today's America (like everything IMO) but any action toward "quotas" is asinine and absurd.

I'm pointing out the double standard. As Dash said, if they want integration, then stop using those platforms to scream discrimination when it's not there. All this does is further segregate and THAT is the problem.

Yeah, it's definitely black people's fault.

I would like to ask the white folks, who feel threatened or angered by this, why does stuff like this make you feel this way?
