The Return

Geez so many sour / salty fans on here. I never insulted the Jazz, just facts. I am very grateful for the opportunity they gave Cotton. You saw Cotton play in I believe COMBINED 8 NBA games, maybe 4 pre-season games? To write a player off, like the fans on here have, after that is laughable.

Also "My Knicks" is a very common term fyi- I know being in Utah, the center of nowhere, sometimes disconnects you from the world. If you don't know what a Friar is, google it. You guys have internet in Utah, right?

Oh yea also, Kris Dunn is the best PG in the country.

Well, first of all, you're a dick for starting this thread. Every chance Bryce had, in pre season with Utah, and then with Phoenix, he failed to help his own cause. I was hoping the opposite would be the case, but you have to take advantage of your opportunities when presented, and unfortunately he did not. Yet he thrives in D League.

Here is a nice no look dime from one of his first games back with Austin:

All you do starting a thread like this is cause these guys to hate anything to do with Providence, judging from some of the comments posted. And you know what? We will be lucky not to get blown out Sunday against Nova. Game moved to 1 PM Sunday due to the blizzard. I love Kris Dunn, but right now he is not playing like the National POY. He just isn't. Maybe Sunday will be a highlight for the Friars, maybe not.
But why take it out on these guys just because Cotton isn't sticking at this level? What a stupid, stupid thread! Don't look now, but nobody on JazzFanz got Cotton cut, and some were rooting for him at the time.
It's life, for God's sake. Some make it, some don't. He probably could help some teams in this league. But if he doesn't get that chance, that's life! He tried. He still is trying. A 10 day somewhere could happen. This league is where the best of the best play. It ain't easy to stick....

Sorry, I did not know that Cotton highlight had already been posted.

The Friars are so named because Providence College is operated by the Dominicans of the Catholic Church. The so-called "Catholic Seven" were the 7 colleges in the old Big East who formed their own league when almighty football caused realignment in college sports. Dave Gavitt always dreamed of an Eastern all basketball league. As most know, by the time the Big East peaked, it had become one of the best Division 1 bb leagues. Three teams in the Final Four very early in that league's existence. The Catholic Seven invited Xavier, Butler, and Creighton to join them, and thus we have the so-called New Big East. Many fans of schools that left the league continue to use the term "New Big East" derisively, to rub in that they will never be what the old Big East was. Some of us, on the other hand, see the existence of the present Big East as the very dream Dave Gavitt had all along. A league revolving around quality bb. And "true" fans of college ball should root for it's success. It's flipping the bird at the Power 5 conferences and almighty $$ football.

The Friars get their name because the school is run by the Dominican Order of the Catholic monastic tradition. Dominican Friars. I don't blame anyone here for slamming them, given GoFriars asinine post....

And BTW, Utah is God's country!! Middle of nowhere? Well, it's the most scenic and beautiful middle of nowhere you'll ever know! Take your breath away beautiful. Living right on the ocean my entire life, I'm sure I would miss it if I moved. But Utah is soothing to the soul. I regard people who live in a Utah to be extremely lucky. In fact, I am still hoping some day to give my wife a tour of that state. Been out there twice and will never forget it. It is God's country, and you should be do lucky to live there!

Providence is irrelevant. Pitino ain't walking through that door. Which is good cuz he'd give errybody AIDS.

And who needs him? Cooley is a great coach. And unlike Pitino and his successors like Gillen and Rick Barnes, Cooley is staying right where he is, in his hometown, and restoring the program at Providence. But I'm ashamed to say GoFriars showed more faith in my team then I did. Dunn and Bentil took care of Nova in Philly yesterday. I honestly was not expecting that; GoFriars was. Shame on me.

But really, who cares for Pitino, already? That was almost 20 years ago. You really think we're still pining after him?! Cooley came home to Providence; told us on day 1 we would win and win big. And he develops players. Who the hell saw Ben Bentil coming?! We got a guy in God Shammgod who any guard in the country would love as a mentor. Our program is in good hands. With a good coach who is not about to move on from his dream job anytime soon....

Ed Cooley is one of the top candidates for National COY, and you think we're dreaming of Pitino? That's a joke!

Edit: Pitino was 30, not 20, years ago. Ain't nobody in Providence waiting for him to walk through any door......

There are certain victories every year in college basketball's regular season that stand out in a special way by the time we get to bracket makin'. These are the biggies, the ones that help teams achieve No. 1 seeds or push them off the bubble and into the field of 68, or further define their case to be a No. 2, 3 or 4. So, in relation to that, let's definitively note: What Providence did on Sunday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia will probably be logged as one of the most meaningful road victories in the sport in 2015-16.

Ed Cooley's team won 82-76 in overtime at fourth-ranked Villanova. It rallied to a win, even after being on the verge of taking the game in regulation -- before Nova senior Ryan Arcidiacono sank a tying 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining. Kris Dunn's final shot in regulation fell wrong, so we got bonus basketball.

In situations like that, the road team usually loses, especially when the road team isn't favored and has an inferior conference record.

But not on Sunday. Providence is taking big steps toward consistent national respect. Providence's Ben Bentil was the star (31 points, 13 rebounds) in what's clearly one of the best wins in recent program history, all things considered......

.....The win here signals something certain: Providence is no fluke. It's going to be a player and a threatening team for the rest of the season. It's going to be in the NCAA Tournament. Sunday's win might be the ace in the sleeve for a No. 4 seed, or a No. 3, or maybe a No. 5. Cooley's club is 66 percent of the way through its regular season, and we know this team has already exceeded misguided expectations from outsiders."
-----------------------------------------------
As long as Ed Cooley is the coach, Providence will not be irrelevant. And we happen to have an extremely rich basketball tradition. Going back decades. You don't have to be in the Final Four every other year to have a good tradition. We have sent our fair share of great players to the NBA, from Lenny Wilkens right down to Kris Dunn come the 2016 draft. No, we're not Ky., and we'll never be Ky. But Ed Cooley will make us a respectable program again. Who the hell needs Rick Pitino.....

And Cooley will continue to recruit. Not only is his guard Dunn a candidate for National POY(and yeah, I know I expressed doubt in this very thread), and the coach a candidate for NCOY, but Ben Bentil is the runaway winner of the most improved player in the college game:

That's the hands down winner, playing himself into a professional career overnight. Developed by Cooley and company. And if Pascal Chukwu had not listened to terrible advice, and transferred to 'Cuse, we'd have a team that could contend for the whole nine yards this year. Ed Cooley does need to win in March. This will be that year. Nobody should be surprised if Providence has a nice run come March.....

Pitino is a scumbag, but I wasn't actually attacking Providence as much as the troll (go friars).
You should have recognized that.

Cooley's a great coach he's well worth whatever they pay him, look no further than Ben Bentil for proof. Providence has been recruiting very well too, they're primed to pull a realllly solid class in 2017.

And I did recognize that. But I did want to take the time to speak up for my team and coach in a manner that I did not do earlier in the thread. And for which, I really did think "shame on me, what kind of a Friar fan am I?" But, yes, I knew you were reacting to the troll. Just did want to make it clear that we don't miss Pitino in Providence. Does not seem possible that our last, and only our second time to the Final Four, was under Pitino in 87. Fact is, by now, many Friar fans were not even born when he coached here. At any rate, I was not attacking you personally; just wanted to speak up for my team. And I felt like an idiot, frankly, for saying we'll probably get blown out by Nova.

That's okay. You were just being realistic. There are often surprises and that's why the games are played. You'd look like a fool of you predicted a win every time out.

Utah has a losing record vs the Knicks in that span though.. 30-32 iirc.
35-36. Doesn't change the fact that the Jazz have performed better overall, despite playing in a better conference, in an undesirable market, and with less money. The Knicks are a joke.

Garbage. Since the Jazz moved to Utah before the 1979/80 season, they've averaged 5 more wins per season than the Knicks.

I never said they weren't. Of course they are. They are the highest valued team and they stink every year. Doesn't change the point that the Knicks will ALWAYS be relevant because they play in New York.
