Official Draft Thread

I think if Paul George and Ante Tomic pan out, the Jazz are close. But both those guys have to really pan out, Millsap needs to keep improving, AK needs to show up, Miles/Matthews need to keep improving and Fess needs to keep improving.

Well, maybe I'll send them "soiled." That should get someone's attention.

Bleacher Report ain't any more legit than the major draft boards, but their predictions for Utah look not only scary but stupid (on the Jazz's part, if BR is right).

Their order for 9 through 11 is Babbitt, Hayward, and George. Leaving George on the board in favor of Babbitt seems crazy.

I might even prefer Aldrich over Babbitt. And I don't prefer Aldrich very much.

NBAdraft.net has Utah taking Babbitt, too.

Fortunately ESPN has cooler heads prevailing--and predicting that the Jazz will go George.
https://espn.go.com/nba/draft

And DraftExpress, which I trust relatively highly, thinks Davis will be on the board.

No Aldrich for Utah? No Udoh? Definitely no Whiteside? Interesting. My hopes are Davis/Udoh if they go big or George if they go small. Whiteside would be OK, too, but he's too raw, so I don't think that they will go there. Davis probably will contribute a bit sooner. Anybody but a big stiff or a skinny SF. No mention of "white" (or Whiteside) necessary. BTW, this photo is yet another reason that Jazz ≠ Jayhawk.

P.S. I'm intrigued by the repeated comments about Tomic being in the mix. At 7 feet, 220, he seems farther away from contributing than Whiteside. And I haven't seen any indication that he's planning to come over soon.

And cheap ******** like Greg Miller are quick to take your money, but don't want to DO WHAT IT TAKES to build a contender. If all Utah does this season is draft at #9 and let Boozer and AK's contracts expire for nothing in return, I'm done. I'll NEVER become a Lakers fan, but I'll mail all my Jazz shirts, shorts, etc to Greg and tell him I can no longer support the Jazz until they're sold to a different ownership group.
You have a strange definition of cheap[skate]. Oklahoma City has a significantly smaller than Utah does, which enabled them to make a trade.

I agree that the Jazz ownership could do a better job, but it would be more productive for them to make sure that the coaching staff is making better decisions. It's unreasonable to expect them to spend more money. IMHO, the FO has been unwisely spending too much money (e.g., re-signing Okur a year earlier than was necessary at little to no discount), not the opposite.

Even if the Jazz keep Boozer AND draft the pick at 9(someone like say Ed Davis), that still doesnt make them a contender. It barely improves them. If they draft at 9 and let go of Booz though, that only makes them much worse. Jazz are 2 solid moves away, apart from a #9 pick,to contend.
By not re-signing Boozer, the interior defense gets better by 5 to 10 points per game. Millsap can make up part of the 3 to 5 point shortfall offensively. Net result: improvement.

From Tweeter:
@ChrisMannixSI: Misspoke in today's SI Video. Sources say Utah exploring options to move up but obviously can't include Boozer in a deal, as Booz is a FA

@ChrisMannixSI: Boozer can be included in a later deal via sign-and-trade, which could include a draft pick. Jazz don't want to lose Boozer for nothing.

All the NO IDEAS WHAT JAZZ ARE DOING are great! This is fun!
and maybe I feel this way because I am not a fan of Boozer at all. I am so glad he's going elsewhere. And even though it doesn't make the Jazz on the level of the Lakers Aldrich does make them better than Boozer (but again, I'm a hater).

AND I've been hot and cold on Babbitt. But I'm warming again today - I think he could be Melo-lite. The dude is accurate. But he's better than Korver, super-athletic and 6'9". It's the fact that he's white that makes us scared. I'll believe it more when I see it but he really could be a stud.

But I'd prefer the Jazz trade up and select Cuz or Favors.

BUT I HAVE NO IDEA IF THEY WILL!! --it's fun, and it'll probably end anti-climacticly. But not necessarily badly. Babbitt could be great. Aldrich will be very good. Monroe will be tall at least - and a good passer. Whoopee. ...maybe they'll trade up.

Maybe one of the mods or the OP can add that bit of information into the title of this thread...just an idea.

If Monroe falls to 9, Jazz have to draft him if only to trade for another player's rights (Cousins in Sac).

No; it's the notion that he's a poor defender that makes us scared. Defense is why Korver isn't a starter, and Babbitt is a Rich Man's Korver, or a Mike Dunleavy replacement. No thanks.

********. You'll do nothing and like it!

My perfect draft:

NJ - Johnson
Minn - Favors
Sac - Cousins
GS - Udoh
Det - Davis
LAC - Aminu
Utah - Monroe

Then Jazz trade AK and rights to Monroe to the Kings for Udrih, Garcia, and the rights to Cousins.

At that stage, the Jazz could sit, but they could be in position to pull off a Brook Lopez heist using the rights to Cousins (who was the best big in workouts there and brought himself into discussions at #3, Avery was always high on him as well) and a Boozer S&T (if only using that salary to take back salary from NJ that they wouldn't want). The Jazz would also get one of Humphries or Yi.

Crossing my fingers.

I also doubt Monroe would be a bad choice at 9. He WOULD fit in very well here, a very nice option in the flex offense.
