I look forward to the day when Utah finally figures out that knowledge is the key to help stem the tide of risky sexual behavior, and when we can finally acknowledge that teens actually want to have sex even if they don't hear about it in school. And changing the sex abuse education to "opt in" is a terrible idea as well. Sex is still scary and icky in Utah (birth rates notwithstanding).

In my experience, knowledge is the key to engaging in the riskiest sexual behavior that anyone can tell you about. That clock tower in the middle of campus isn't going to have sex in itself and someone has to tell you which door doesn't latch all the way.

So true. I hadn't considered that particular scenario, unfortunately.

I also think there are things thrown into bills that have nothing or little to do with the main point of the bill that can ruin it. It's frustrating to see a good bill go down because something dumb and unrelated is put in it, or see something good thrown into a bill that has no shot of passing.

Often true, but in this case the arguments against sex ed is that knowledge will cause kids to have sex. It is right at the heart of the bill that the objections occur.

I'd rather they get the right knowledge from parents and teachers than what they will "learn" anyways in the schoolyard. Just my 2 cents, but what do I know. There might be more to the issue, but boiled down to the heart of what the kids will deal with anyways I'd rather they had good information to counter or fill in gaps or clear up misunderstandings. Kids talk about sex at much earlier ages than they should have to these days, but that's life and those are the facts.

I personally think parents should teach it, but not everyone has parents that teach it to their children, or have parents at all. There needs to be multiple good ways to pass on information.

While knowledge at times does give ideas which may lead to actions, it's still better to have good information for the choices over possible bad, flawed, or minimal information on the topic which can also lead to action.
