Hulk Hogan - Awarded 115 Million

This seems like a bigger deal than the Andrews case in terms of the effect the case will have. The Andrews case will make hotels more careful but I imagine this will make websites think twice before publishing.

Wow.
And according to the article none of that money is punitive damages. And there might be more money coming his way soon.

Hogan was awarded $55 million in economic damages and $60 million for emotional distress. There will be a hearing on Monday to determine if punitive damages will be awarded.

That's allot of money.
He was having sex with his friends wife (who, to be fair, was in an open marriage) and cheating on his own wife at the same time. Apparently hulk didn't know he was being filmed and neither did the woman.

So know one knows who filmed it.

I guess if you are a celebrity and want lots of money you could theoretically film a 61 second video of yourself cheating on your wife and having sex with someone else's wife and send it anonymously to some website for it to be shown on and then sue for 115 million.

The biggest thing is that Hogan was recorded saying a bunch of racist **** during the video and it made him lose a ton of sponsorship money.

His former best friend did the filming. The camera was supposedly unknown to Hulk and the woman.

I think it's ridiculous to suggest that he suffered $55 million in economic damages or $60 million in emotional damages, but our court system is so completely messed up that juries accept this sort of logic and hand out crazy awards.

A least, unlike the Andrews case, the award is against an entity (the gossip website) that actively participated in the wrongdoing. Unless I'm misunderstanding, though, the person who actually committed the violation of privacy (former best friend/husband) is getting off with no punishment. As usual the lawyers go after the deep pockets. They're far more interested in the cash than the crime.

Gawker is trash, and I hope they go out of business. I haven't thought about the effect this case will have on the bigger picture. But **** Gawker.

Is this true? So the implication is that it's okay to be racist as long as you don't do it publicly? If his loss of income due to the racist remarks (which I haven't heard) is really the basis for the economic damages there is some sick logic behind awarding it.

Juris Doctorate Joe on the case.

I had never heard of gawker before this thread was created btw. Maybe this lawsuit will gain gawker some more hits to their website.

To me it's more like: you shouldn't be racist. If you are racist you better not be caught on film or be in public.

Or it means that people have privacy rights in this country.

Right. We're somehow supposed to accept that a sex video of a private citizen (that he never consented to) is totally newsworthy and must be considered within our right to free press.

I said it, it's true.

So when Donald Sterling did it he lost an NBA team. When Hulk Hogan did it he gets rich?

How does that work.
