Utah gets Favors AND Babbitt

This does makes some sense. IF NJ wants to be a player in the East next year, trading for Boozer and CJ and adding LeBron, or at worst and Joe Johnson makes them a player. They now have one of the best young C's, a 20-10 PF, a very good PG, an excellent coach, and adding LeBron makes them the favorites. Boozer is a much better bet for NJ than Favors is. If they get LeBron, Boozer is the PERFECT robin to LeBron.

I don't believe that they can sign Boozer anyways. Utah holds the upper hand with Boozer, because they can pay him the most. Boozer will go where the money is, and if Utah will give him the extra year, he will be here.

Wes Johnson will still be available at #9 thereby fulifilling the rumour that Booz and Johnson will both end up in NJ. This also allows the Nets to pay out a second large contract for a free agent. The more attractive they make the team look now the better their chances of landing Wade or James. They would be doing something that the Jazz do not no how to do. Make major changes thereby showing that they are commited to winning.

Everyone keeps saying that it makes no sense but what it does is effectively guarantee that NJ gets a top free agent (Boozer) plus a lottery pick (Jazz #9). That's the funny thing about free agents. Even when you have lots of money to throw around they don't necessarily end up chosing you. Now they are in a position where they look like a pretty good team and convincing Lebron or Wade to come to town goes up dramatically.
 
Of course this is all speculation, but this actually has some credence to it...which is more than 90% of the "trade" threads here.

Vitale just said that the Nets are making a huge mistake in not drafting Cousins. He thinks Favors will be a good player but that Cousins will be an immediate impact and overall a better player.

This actually makes less sense than trying to pull of a random 4 team trade on ESPN trade machine.

Put yourself in the GM"s shoes or think if yourself as a New jersey fan

I actually agree. I think Cousins is a better player. I think his mid range shot is better and his low post game is better. I think he has a better NBA body also.
Favors is way more athletic but that is all I see.

A Cousins, Lopez combo scares me more than Favors Lopez.
 
Barring a last-minute change in thinking, the New Jersey Nets will select Georgia Tech freshman Derrick Favors over Syracuse's Wesley Johnson with the No. 3 pick in tonight's draft, ESPN.com was told Thursday.

According to a source with knowledge of the selection, the Nets made the decision because they are not guaranteed to get a power forward such as Utah's Carlos Boozer, Toronto's Chris Bosh or Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire in free agency.

The source said that Favors is also the most tradeable asset available to the Nets in a possible deal -- more so than Johnson. The source said the Nets might make a deal Thursday night after selecting Favors, or wait to see if one comes in July during the free-agency period. The source said if the Nets make a deal they would have to include the pick of Favors.

Johnson and Boozer are represented by the same agent, Rob Pelinka, but he was adamant Wednesday that there was no package deal to get both players to New Jersey.

Pelinka obviously wants Johnson to be selected as high as possible, but he said the two players are working independently.

Another source close to Boozer said he was still undecided on his ultimate destinations. His options include staying with Utah or looking at New Jersey, Chicago or Miami.

Unless something changes with the Nets, the first three selections in Thursday's draft will be Kentucky freshman John Wall to Washington, then Ohio State's Evan Turner to Philadelphia. Favors then will go to the Nets.

Washington can't say publicly that it will take Wall, but the Wizards have said it privately, and no one in the league is considering another option. Wall worked out only for the Wizards.

The Sixers did work out Turner, Johnson and DeMarcus Cousins.

But Turner told ESPN.com on Wednesday he expects to be selected by the 76ers, and multiple sources close to coach Doug Collins said the 76ers would select Turner because of his maturity, professionalism and ability to make an impact immediately with new teammates Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala on the perimeter.

Wow. It'd be weird to see Granger as a Net. If I'm The Pacers, I don't do that deal. It solves one of their needs, which is to get a point guard, but I don't see Yi as the PF they're looking for, and it leaves them with a huuuuuuge hole at the SF position. Earlier there was talk of getting a couple of picks and Eric Maynor for the #10 from the Thunder. If that's still an option, I think that's a much better deal for Indiana, because it allows them to resolve needs without creating holes on their roster -- and they would still have their expiring contracts to use as trade bait in their search for a power forward.
 
Although -- duh -- they could resolve their PF problem with that #3 pick. But then what does NJ plan to do? Draft a pg at #10 and sign David Lee or Booze to play PF?

Not sure if you understood the trade but the Nets would get the 3rd pick in the draft. Favors or Cousins

Exactly. And would Lebron want to join such a young team? It would take at least a year or two in my opinion with two young ones in Favors and Lopez up front to even sniff a ring. But with a vet like Boozer or Bosh? Right away possibly.

ESPN reported that they're taking Favors because he's very good but also because he's the most tradeable asset should they not be able to get a PF on their own and have to do so via a S&T.
