Following 2016 potential draftees

I think we're overlooking DeAndre Bembry as well. That guy can ball. Probably has the best combination of defense, rebounding and passing of any wing player, just needs to shoot better. If anybody is going to be the next Wes Matthews type (as in, where did he come from?!) it's gonna be Bembry, IMO.

Did you watch the DX video on him? He doesnt seem all that good on defense.

Primarily, yeah. Doesn't have the strength to guard anybody, not quick enough to guard the smaller of the big guys. He has some nice skills, but I don't see it happening with him.

Oh I definitely see him as a big project. I didn't seem like he couldn't get to current-Rudy level of strength. Which would be enough to make him playable, where he could then do good things on offense in mid-range and out further. It didn't look to me like foot speed on defense was going to be his issue.

****, I dunno, though. I binged on the draft today. I could be getting things messed up.

EDIT: for the record, I wouldn't draft Maker or Qi. Probably. Heh.

I don't agree with that at all.

Watch hm, he has quick feet, prett decent wingspan, he can play defense. It was just an energy/effort thing. He played a lot of minutes and did everything for them offensively. I'm not concerned about his ability to defend at all.

Just going off Draftexpress, he was 208 at the Hoops Summit a year ago, and 218 now. 9 pounds in a year for a skinny guy isn't much. I'd bet he just can't put on weight.

I'm with you though, I probably wouldn't draft either.

Or maybe Chinese teams just have really bad weight programs.

We are working out Malik Pope tomorrow. How do you guys feel about drafting him in the second round?

I dont think we have room for 2nd round picks on this roster.

That's kind of true. It's close. It will be up to the last spot I think. The current system with the D-League affiliations is weird. They need to make some sort of rule whereby a team can send players down to the D-League while they are under contract but not count towards the 15 players roster number. Maybe they can limit it to players on rookie contracts so teams wouldn't abuse the system. This way teams would have higher stake in developing players and would have the opportunity to develop players without their roster suffering for it.

So if you believe the pundits, this is how the draft is going to shake out...

Top Tier
1. Simmons (Sixers)
2. Ingram (Lakers)

2nd Tier
3. Murray (Celtics)
4. Bender (Suns)
5. Hield (T'wolves)
6. Dunn (Nola)

Then things start to get a bit muddy...

Tier 3 appears to be
7. Jaylen Brown (Nuggets)
8. Jacob Poeltl (Kings)
9. Marquese Chriss (Raptors)
10. Skal Labissiere (Bucks)
11. Henry Ellenson (Magic)

However, there are a bunch of players in this range, especially bigs, where beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You've got: Deytona Davis, Domantas Sabonis and Thon Maker who could all go in the 8 - 12 range if teams prefer them to the other bigs for one reason or another. This leads me to believe some team that's looking for a big in this tier is going to be calling the Jazz asking for the #12 pick, as the rest of the stand-out bigs are probably going to be gone by 15 or 16.

At this point in the draft, you've also got the tier-2 wings, including Timothe Luwawu, Furkan Korkmaz, possibly Malachi Richardson and maybe even Malik Beasley who might be considered BPA by certain teams. You've also got the next tier of PGs including Wade Baldwin and Demetrius Jackson. The talent level may seem pretty even from picks 8 - 18. It makes sense for trades to take place so that teams can get "their guy."

So from the Jazz's standpoint, there are going to be several bigs available to them and several wings that are all on a very similar tier. One or more players from the 7 - 11 group is very likely to drop to 12 if teams want a guard or wing instead of a big. Jazz will likely be hoping for Brown, Skal or Chriss to drop.

Trading the #12 pick and another pick (e.g., OKC 1st) might get the Jazz as high as 7 or 8 in a trade-up scenario, depending on what Denver, Sacramento or Toronto are looking for.

Jaylen Brown seems like he might be stuck in tweener world. He shoots okay, but not well enough at this point to be considered a solid wing shooter. His FT percentage doesn't say shooter really either. He's strong, but not big enough to really play inside or overpower people at the next level. He has decent athleticism, but not so much that he'll be blowing by people and playing above the rim consistently. I'm trying to see him as a solid starter but think he may just be a rotation player.

Anyone have any insight?

Sign Crabbe or Tucker. Trade 12 and our two 2nds for 17ish (take Maker) and some team's 1st next year.

My dream off-season.

That's an added vet/depth, going for the home run with Maker (and a guy who has some fire), and getting an extra 1st next year.

Not sure I want Maker with the 17th, but this is actually a pretty dang good deal.

I'm not sure there is anything that can be done with our 2nd rounders-- but I'd even package the 12 and the second rounders for a team's unprotected pick next year (that wants to really make a push to the playoffs next season). Pick up Crabbe and/or Tucker to round things off.

I wonder if you could sell Philly on that. Or the Kings. or the Suns, or someone like that.

Our 2bd rounders are practically worthless. I do hope we draft Josh Adams with one of them though. He's better than Bryce Cotton for sure.

I like Caris Levert.

Also like DeAndre Bembry. I wonder if we could cash in all of our 2nd rounders for him.

realizing how well he performed at the Combine, Bembry might go late teens. Dude is a complete swiss-army knife.

There's just something about Bembry that intrigues me. I can't see him not sticking in the NBA.

Who'd do this trade:

Suns trade: 28th pick (if Bembry is there), PJ Tucker, filler
Jazz trade: next year's GS pick, filler

I know 2017 is supposed to be the deepest thing ever but that GS pick is gonna be a 30th guaranteed. Making sure Hayward stays might be more important.

I agree. It would sort of suck to not have a 1st rounder but we'd get Exum back at the 1, add Burks at the 2, and Tucker/Crabbe at the 3 AND then have what, 3 1sts next year?

If it's a ****head team you mentioned, ****ing sign me up, homie.

I don't agree. DL has a great eye for talent and there are 2nd round gems all the time.
