Joe Johnson Coming to Utah

Regarding the role he is going to play, I just can`t see him pushing for a starting role. In the regular season, he is perfect off the bench where he can provide scoring and leadership while he can rest his body by not playing 30+ minutes every night. In the play offs, he will probably not start, but he will very likely finish games. This is a win-win move for both parties and I am ecstatic about it.

Deron wasn`t on the team, IIRC. Didn`t we actually play the Nets with Deron the next day? I remember watching the game and cheering every time the Hawks gave the ball to Josh Smith and biting nails when Joe got it.

That could be the case for sure. I relate that game back to the 'come back kid's' road trip back in the day. All the booze from the past few years of Jazz games is catching up to my memory I suppose..

Hopefully this year you'll be drinking in celebration of our glory.

For the money in the deal he accepted it has to be the role he was offered. I hope that he wasn't promised a starting spot. I'm thinking maybe at this point in his career, with all the criticism he's earned and absorbed, he perhaps wants to accept a role with less pressure. He can be an important contributor, mentor, and veteran presence with our team. We're either going to love him or "meh" him. It's a short cheap deal so buyer's remorse can't be that bad. We have 20mil available if we still want to sign another FA this summer or absorb salary through trade so the opportunity cost isn't even that high.

Not just that, but the fact we signed him so early and at a reasonable amount. For once, we aren't the team someone settled for when they couldn't go where they really wanted.

Makes me wonder if Utah didn't promise him playing time he couldn't get elsewhere. The combination of playing time and for a team that looks ready to make a jump makes some sense.

The most DL could have promised him would have been that Quin will be 'fair' when it comes to playing time and not play favourites...

As far as I know he chose Miami over Cleveland at the end of last season due to playing time being the most important factor. We're only 1-2 months removed from that, so it makes me wonder too whether this is going to be an issue....

Idk, I guess he will address that in his press conference.

The probable truth though: every other contender either couldn't afford him or was too busy trying to court KD. Utah was best team to come in with solid offer. Could potentially wait it out and maybe someone who strikes out offers JJ a bigger contract but runs risk of Utah finding a different player while he waits.

I love this signing. I was hoping for Dudley, but JJ is a better player than Dudley and does far more on the court. Not only is he a decent to good three point shooter on par with Dudley, he is a top tier (or close to it) isolation player, something Dudley was not. Plus, he has years of playoff experience and (I am reading between the lines) appears content to come off the bench to play a support role, he wanted to come here, and was signed at a modest salary compared to what other FAs are getting. This is a huge upgrade over Ingles. With the additions of Hill and Johnson, we have become significantly deeper and better. A great move by DL.

If you accept the narrative that he unexpectedly bit when Jazz front office was making a courtesy call then he must really want whatever was offered, and I don't mean the 22 million. That pitch must have been sexy to him. It comes down to him being promised minutes/starting, a role, or both.

I like it, more depth. This off-season has been really interesting. Love the signing a lot more than Hill's contract. I would have liked signing Dudley for what he got, but I'm ok with it.

This is exactly what I wanted out of FA. A veteran who has been on winning teams, can still contribute, and get them for a moderate deal. We hit all 3. As long as JJ comes in motivated for this team and we don't try to overuse him it'll be a great fit.

Hill/Exum
Hood/Burks
Hayward/JJ
Favors/Lyles
Gobert/Withey

If we are relatively healthy we are a lock for the playoffs and probably pushing 50.

Joe is going to finish games and be tasked with showing Gordon, Rodney and the rest of our young core how you kill close games. That would essentially make him the man on this team, regardless of how many minutes he gets, and should be a very enticing role for a veteran like him.

Gobert is our only core player that can't play multiple positions.

Exum PG, SG
Hill PG, SG
Burks SG, PG
Hood SG, SF
JJ SG, SF
Hayward SG, SF, PF
Lyles PF,SF
Favors PF, C

He can play some 3 and small ball 4 actually. I remember against the Hawks in the first round two years ago, he did and did it well.
