Dude it's July, middle of summer!

(I'm kidding)

Chatted with Rudy Gobert. He's excited France qualified for the Olympics and said he'll make a decision about playing in a couple of days.

Yes, there will be some guys cut from the team before the games start, but unless he gets injured he'll make it.

Group B is very balanced. Spain should win, but after that it is up for grabs. Think Brazil will have to finish in front of Nigeria and Argentina to make it to the quarterfinals.

The Jazz could have had 6 players in Rio.

Brazil - Neto
France - Gobert, Diaw
Australia - Exum, Ingles
USA - Hayward

Genessy reporting that Gobert may say no to the Olympics in order to rst/continue to work on strength, even though he "wants to play".

The Jazz center said his French pals have not pressured him into joining them next month in Brazil, although that would certainly increase France’s chances of medaling.

“They know I want to play,” Gobert said. “They know.”

Gobert feels good about his decision to not participate with the French in the Olympic qualifying tournament.

For one thing, his right ankle, which he injured in that critical loss to the Mavericks late in the 2015-16 season, needed time to heal.

Gobert also committed to work on his body’s strength this offseason, something that will help the 7-foot-1 big become an even more dominating force inside the paint for the Jazz on defense and on offense.

“It was to work on my body, you know. It was too early for me. I wasn’t ready to play,” Gobert said of the Olympic qualifier. “I really wanted to spend some time at P3 to get stronger and have a good summer after.”

The 23-year-old struggled somewhat at the beginning of last NBA season because he expended so much of himself for a couple of months with the French national team. He never had adequate time to rest his body before Utah’s training camp began in the fall.

Gobert said this June and July was “the perfect time” to do strength work.

Meh.

This rio Olympics looks like it could be one royal disaster. Police and public trans are threatening strikes, Zika is running rampant, and the water is filled with garbage and poo.

I'd stay home and get ready for the NBA season too. And then cash in on a sweet pay raise in the next summer or two. Even Average players are scoring contracts that were normally reserved for max players just a few years ago.

I remember some people asking why we dont extend Gobert early, this is why you don't. I bet the only reason he would choose not to is because it's his contract year. Gobert doesnt seem like the guy who would pass up a chance to play in the Olympics under normal circumstances.

Source? What does it matter to a virus what season it is in a tropical country?

Has Lopo infected everyone with the stupid virus? Gobert playing in Rio is a waste of meaningful development time, which typically happens in the off-season. Not to forget injury risk. Terrible news.

Great point. I think we should just put Gobert in bubble wrap until late October.... Don't be such a whiny little baby.

Our players haven't had any playoff minutes to use to get better in "win or go home" situations. Of all the players we had playing major minutes last year, I thought Gobert looked like the one who could use more playing time. And if you're talking about representing your country playing in the biggest international competition of the year that happens every 4 years, then yes, I think this is meaningful development time.

Gobert did not improve last season because he wasted his development time playing for the national team. Getting minutes doesn't magically make you better. You get better in practice, and then you translate those skills to in-game situations.

This is a massive offseason for Rudy. He needs to improve.

Really hoping he stays & I think he knows it too. He'll get a way fatter contract too
