Pokemon Go

I've heard several people to say this game is a good thing because it gets people out and exercising. Really? Wandering in the park looking at your phone is exercise? Hopefully someone will soon create a craze game that actually encourages real physical activity. I use a cycling app called Strava that does a good job of this, but it's not very mainstream.

I kind of want to uninstall it with how crazy it has become, but I like catching the random pokemon as I walk around. I dont understand the level of obsession though.
It's too late, you won't get your ********* back.

That word is censored? Maybe huevos? Balls? Nuts?

There is a little tab that tells you there are nearby pokemon but not which direction. If you are simply walking around you will find them.

The claw marks show how close you are, the lesser the closer and if you choose one pokemon from nearby list, there will be a green pulse emanating from nearby tab when you face the right direction.

FitBit sort of does this.

They are going hiking, on bike rides, playing at the park with their kids... no all of them are just walking around in circles. Just the idiots.

I'll take kids walking around in circles over kids channel surfing in circles any day of the week.

I really wish there was something like this in my younger years. My childhood would have been much different at times.

Please explain. How old are you and why wasn't it different?

I'm 40 and had an Atari when I was young (prob got it when I was about 6 or 7) but the controller broke and my dad refused to get another one to teach us to take care of things. I got a Nintendo when I was in 8th grade I think (1988) which was much later than most kids around my age. But I never played them that much because I just LOVED sports and my father, quite frankly, wouldn't let me. I'd play baseball about 3-4 hours a day in the summer. We'd play some manhunt in our neighborhood (which was surrounded by forests) for hours. In the fall, it was football a couple hours every day. In the winter, more football with basketball. In the spring, more basketball with baseball integrated too. I feel like if parents "force" kids to go outside and play, they'll make the best of it and not only indirectly stay in shape through activity but learn lifelong lessons on teamwork, poise, sacrifice, creativity and more.

I'm 33. When younger, I did not have a hand held device with a random GPS overlay linking one of my favorite things(too old for Pokemon, not too old for Ninja Turtles) to walking to different places. My parents were not much support; signing up for a little league wasn't an option(too expensive, time consuming for them, etc).

Did I go out with my friends? Absolutely. Did I run around with them? Sure. Were most of my hours, even those at a friends place, spent hovering over a TV watching or playing Street Fighter II/Mortal Kombat? Emphatically yes. Had I games that got me out into the world more instead of hovering at a screen, would I have had a LOT more exercise? Indeed.

That's not even saying those console games were bad.. had I not been indoors playing those, I might have been outside shooting neighboorhood cats with a BB gun, or playing with fire until I scorched the field next to my house.

This was not meant to be a "I never did anything, had I this I would have done something", statement. Don't take it that far, as it wasn't implied or meant to be that way. Take it as "Yeah, I woulda been outside a lot more had that screen been mobile, and required me go to different locations".

Gotcha. At least you know that and hopefully won't let your own children fall into that same trap.

If I ever have children, I will be engaged with them, and engage them in many different activities. Teaching myself the things that I probably should have been taught by my parents at a younger age(working within a team, practice actually does help, existing as part of the group, getting up and moving around is an important part of life, etc) was hard. I won't put anyone else through that.

This is in no way directed at you Roachie, but it's about the Pokemon people.

If it takes a freaking game to get you to enjoy the outdoors (and no, staring at your phone while walking is not enjoying the outdoors), then there's something wrong with you. It's not healthy to be cramped up inside all day! Go on a hike, take a bike ride, do something! Be active! I just don't get it...who wants to watch tv when they could actually go do something?

No doubt. I can't wait til next summer. I'm gonna take my daughter, who will be almost three years old, to a rock climbing gym. Her ability to climb things, like a wall at Bounce U seems to be advanced.

IAWTP. And I love movies and tv. But activity is so stimulating as well.

Lmafo. Who cares what it takes? At least they are out. Also not all players needed this to get out. Some are simply doing this while out. Different strokes for different folks.
