Military Coup in Turkey underway

Fascinating and possibly dangerous stuff, but if it's a move away from islamism this is a great thing. But will there be bloodshed?

I was in Istanbul for a week last June and there was definitely tension in the air. Many people I spoke with remarked at their concern for their country relating to surging islamism. I hope this coup is about a move away from that.

For what it's worth, American news agencies claimed that Erdogan was moving towards a Putlin like Islamic dictatorship. The military, again, according to Americans news outlets, wants a secular Turkey.

Listening to CNN, seems like it's too early to tell. Whoever their commentator is, he's saying the people are rallying for Erdogan, and that the military blundered in not taking him prisoner at the start. Some are saying the coup has failed, others that it has succeeded. Crowds in huge numbers confronting military vehicles. I couldn't tell if they were supporting or denouncing. Commentator said they are against the coup.
