Ya, you and I read the question differently. You read it as "do you support the protesters right to protest?" So you voted yes (and i agree with that). I read it like "do you support the actual protest itself?" So i voted no.

Not sure what OL meant in the question in the op.

Not sure what you are getting at. That is just what happened on election night. Until California was fully reported Trump was leading the national popular vote. After California was done reporting it had flipped and Hilary won the popular vote. I was just pointing out that the national numbers do not reflect necessarily the actual votes in every single state, going state-by-state. Trump did not lose every state and still win the election. He won most states, lost a few in fairly tight races, and lost one of them really big which pushed the results the other way. You can go look at all the numbers if you want.

I read it like CL did.

But I think most of us are in actual agreement.
 
Why not support the protests? Vibrant, passionate and peaceful protest is the perfect constitutionally protected outlet for those disaffected and frustrated with the election. The protests will likely fade of their own accord in a few days or weeks and only flare up again when Trump is inaugurated and things quickly get real.

In any case, protest is just an active form of dissent, in contrast to the safety of words on forums like this, you put your actual self into the street and your body on the line with like-minded people in an effort to make something new. That’s politics at its most basic level; the attachment to others to remake the world. It’s something to be celebrated rather than sneered upon.

If Trump does turn out to be what the Never Trump people fear most, then the protests will return in earnest, and the ultimate goal will be much more clear and focused: to build dissent into a social movement that will produce leaders capable of replacing Trump in 2020.

I'm not sure I would use that word to describe these protests. I do not consider all of the tactics used to be "peaceful"

This is an area that is entirely opinion and perspective.

To me flag burning, blocking traffic and chanting/yelling vulgarities are not "peaceful". Now it may not be "violent" but I wouldn't call these "peaceful". Neither is vandalism and assault but those are the fringes and not the protest itself so I'll discount those.

He also said "vibrant" and "passionate" which is much more accurate IMO. Either way I support their right to protest 100% have at it.

I'd also use "confrontational" and "aggressive".

Peaceful protests means they're not being violent. It doesn't mean they only do things you like. And shouting vulgarities? Seriously?

Why would we need a poll asking the right to protest? Of course you have the right. C'mon guys...

Seriously how? Like "BS it's not happening" or you disagree with how I see "peaceful".

To me those are not peaceful acts. I don't believe lighting dumpsters on fire in roadways is a peaceful act. I don't. Same holds true for the other items I listed.

I think there is space between not violent and peaceful. All we disagree with is how we are applying the word "peaceful".

Words have actual meaning. Peaceful protests means they're not out to inflict physical harm on others. It doesn't mean they sit quietly on the sidewalk whispering niceties to each other.

You have a point about destruction of property, and I understand the condemnation of such acts. But the flag burning and being vulgar are matters of free speech. Also, the vulgar part is laughable and you shouldn't have even brought it up.

It's a ****ing right of every American citizen! That's as bad as the other side trying to control people's speech and thoughts with appeals to "political correctness".

I never said it wasn't. I support the protests. Read the thread. Voted for it and said so a couple times. I even support the loud passion of it.

But if you feel me disagreeing on the choice of 1 word used to describe the protests is me trying to control them than that's your problem. One I'm not really interested in helping you sort out. I'm not even saying they should stop all their tactics.

This convo is done as far as I'm concerned.
