What's new

That moment when Exum "got it."

Does anyone have advanced stats on Dante for this season to see if he has "gotten it" because I am still waiting for that moment. He shows flashes but he is a LONG way off from being the force we need. Hill is there and if we can lock him down for a few years it will give Exum some breathing room an a mentor. I am still not sold he is the real deal. I guess too much hype for guys like Miles has made me cynical. Miles was the next MJ, but never even became a rotation player.

We can uncouple Exum and Hill in these types of discussions. The progression or regression of one needn't be related to the other like some kind of nervous tick. We need multiple guards. They're two guards.

Not only did he not get better offensively, his defense actually got worst. keep the dream alive that Exum is the next big thing? honestly the probability of him playing in China two years from now is greater than him becoming an allstar at this point.

Can't believe you actually hit send.

Hill will likely retire right as Exum is entering his prime, so the mentorship relationship inextricably links them together. Unless you for some reason are dead set against Hill teaching Exum how to be a professional point guard.

I don't see Exum having a specific point where he "got it" He's coming from pretty much zero experience of top level basketball that it's going to be a long process of improvement, it's not like he's come in with a certain skill set and is learning how to apply it

Depends what you want. If you want to see he is improving over his first year there is plenty of that beyond the eye test. Despite his Usage going way up his turnover rate is 1/2 of what it was his rookie year. His true shooting % is up from .45 to .51. He is getting to the FT line 2.5 times more per 36 min. His VORP is .1(up from -0.8 his rookie year) with -2.0 being replacement level player. His win Shares and his BPM are way up. The majority of his shots are within 3 ft of the hoop now which was one of the big complaints his rookie year. But he is scoring from close, mid and 3 point range this season and much more well rounded. He is rebounding at a much higher rate from every statistically standpoint. These are huge improvements over his rookie. All while playing more minutes and still being 21.

I would compare him to George hill at the same age but Hill was not in the NBA at his age. As far Hills stats at a year older than Exum they are pretty similar to Exums right now.

Exum "getting it" is a term that has no real meaning. He is showing flashes of elite abilities and is showing consistency at making the right play and helping the team win. Is he playing at an MVP or All-star level? Hell no, but I dont think even his biggest fans thought he would be. I think best case he will start to get close to all-star player around 25, which is in 4 more years. He is starting to show that he is a solid PG who could be a backup for any NBA team and be helpful and useful. Hopefully by the end of the season or next year he starts to show he is close to a starting PG which would be great for a 22 year old.

I dont think anyone thought CJ would be MJ or anywhere close. People just compared his style to that of Kobe or MJ but I never heard anyone think he would ever be on their level. He did seemingly have some potential and lacked consistency with the Jazz. He never made any big jumps season from season but he did improve slowly every year with the Jazz until his last, which is probably why we moved on. He has found his place as a solid rotation player in Indiana. Exum is showing flashes the same but he is also showing way more consistency than CJ. Exum has been a good defender. Exum has played within the offense and got the team into plays. Exum has shown he can get into the paint pretty well. His jump shot is up and down but his mechanics look better and I think he will be a decent jump shot, which will open up his game a ton when defenders have to guard his jump shot or bite on his pump fakes.

Probably should've read thru this as the answer to my question is likely somewhere in here but what is the general consensus on Exum thus far in the season?

I don't get to watch as many games as I would prefer but from the little that I have seen, he appears to have retained his "near-elite" physical tools, continues to provide very good defense, & seems to be getting slightly more comfortable/aggressive on offense (although there is certainly still much room for improvement). Is this a reasonably accurate assessment?

He may never turn into that true superstar (although I still see him as having a very high floor due to his physical tools, basketball iq, defense, etc) but I believe that the high expectations that were (rightfully) placed on him out of the draft have occasionally influenced the general perception of where he currently is at this point in his early career.

Would love to hear a more educated opinion on his progress (keeping in consideration the fact that he's a 21 year old, who missed a full year of development & is coming off of a serious injury after making about as drastic of a leap in competition as one can possibly make) & whether he has truly "gotten it" or if he's still in the process of "getting it".

He certainly has a "skill set" that he can't apply as well as he would like. He is a combination of fast and long that doesn't happen often. His court vision is pretty good as well. He plays excellent D for his position.

Somewhere between "meh" and "not bad".

Dude, i'm a fan, i was implying his "skill set" was much more on the incomplete and undeveloped end of the scale. His dribbling is still well below average for a PG. Still think he's going to be awesome in 3-4 years but it's going to be a long process.
