Jazz at Dubs Official Game Thread -- 8:30PM MT: NBATV, ROOT

We are damned if we do damned if we dont. More damned if we dont resign him. We have to max Hayward and hope he progresses through the season, and beyond.
Although hes no Batman, hes one hell of a Robin. We cant afford to lose his numbers. Unless they have someone else, as a good plan B, we must
bite the bullet and shovel a bunch of money to the guys house.
Great post.
I think you are right.

Good news is that Hayward had a big stretch of games this year that had me feeling happy to max him. So that gives me hope. Maybe it was just a hot streak and fools gold.... Maybe a legit pg will really make all the difference and totally elevate his game.

Need to get this team healthy and find out.

Hayward should legit seek out the shrink that John Smoltz used. Smoltzy, early in his career, was a headcase. He saw this sports psychiatrist and became of the most focused, big game pitchers ever. He may even saw the dude his whole career. Not sure.

The thing with Hayward is that he can be a true #1 option, which he has proved this season, but he needs a solid 2nd and 3rd option beside him to be effective.

He's an excellent shot creator and playmaker, and he's elite at getting to the free throw line. That's a first option.

These days, a good second option is an efficient shooter that can take pressure off of the #1 guy while also being able to put the ball on the floor. Some nights, Rodney Hood is that. But he's inconsistent, so he's not quite there yet.

I think Hill is that guy. He takes pressure off of Hayward and makes sure that the defense isn't just keying in on Hayward. He can make defenses pay when they pay too much attention to Hayward. Mack and Exum don't do that.

We'll be fine. Hayward will be fine. And once we get Hill back and rolling, Hayward will be back to that 22-25 point a night guy.

Plus we already have our Batman (Gobert) and another Robin (Hill). This team will get healthy and start tearing up the league.

I really think quite the opposite of "we're dammed if we do, damned if we don't resign Hayward".. I'm not apt to have that cornered/back to the wall mindset, but still I think it's just overstating things... I don't think it's an accurate assessment. I think this roster has much more wiggle room than some are crediting it for.

I feel like I could figure the moves to damage control the loss of Hayward.. so I'm sure they've got all sorts of scenarios in mind for if he walks..

I agree

Lolololol. How is that even possible?
Exum might be the only player in the league that could pull it off.
It seems you would have to be intentionally avoiding the ball and contact to not get a single rebound, free throw, assist or anything.

Yeah, he was terrified out there. At times he looks like he could turn into something special and other times seems like a total bust. He's a ****ing enigma.

Haywards getting max from someone. Deal with it.
Biz decision if jazz want to offer more or not.

He makes everyone better. Is unselfish. Gives up points every game. He will be in high demand

This is the 1st time Hayward controls where he goes. He is on record saying he wants to win so unless we make a deep playoff run I think he is gone. Even if that means slightly less

So now do you do a Dwill trade or do you think you'll get the girl?

Maybe that's why Hayward last few games have been crap. Maybe sick, maybe involved in trade data who knows

but enough about Hayward. This team stunk up the bed against the big boys.

I not as angry as the loss as I am WORRIED about the lack of nasty on this team.

My biggest concern about this team taking the big next step is that lack of a nasty energy player. Or the fact that none of our key players seem to play with a lot of fire/nastiness. Sure Hill seems to be an intense guy, but injuries have left question marks about his durability. Favors, and Hood have shown a little flash here or there or emotion but nothing more than a glimpse. Hayward the same. Gobert is about as nasty as it comes, and he still doesnt come across as a super intense guy on the court. Lyles fun, energy, but toughness? We've seen him butt heads with a few players, but his defense tends to be soft. Diaw no. Mack is a spazz. Where is the toughness and grit? Burks?

I'm not so sure Gordon is a Jazz lifer. I get the feeling that factors excluding basketball might have a big influence. Boston is a pretty cool city after all.

No one other than Jazz fans are going to even blink if he leaves after what Durant just did.

I made a thread on this in late July that got flamed pretty hardcore but I suggested throwing the max at future HOF'er Chris Paul as a first priority and I still like that idea.

Sup, sexy.

Srsly doe, can someone give me a good synopsis of last night.

This turned into mop up duty in the 2nd Q. Jazz had 33pts at the half and scored no more than 21 in any Q.

The starters scored 25 points on 28 FGA's (10 makes total - 7 of which were from Exum and Rudy on 8 attempts..) The Warriors starters scored more than the whole Jazz squad.

Warriors started very slow or they'd have finished with well over 100.

I only watched the first half.
No one other than Gobert could score.
It sucked.
Warriors were struggling too. Then klay got going, then steph and kd started playing better.
Jazz down 20 at half. I went to bed.

I live in San Francisco. When I was back in SLC for Thanksgiving, I paid $80 for great lower bowl tickets about 15 rows away from the court at the Smart Home. I paid $100 last night for nosebleed tickets at Oracle and wish I hadn't.

That said, a few thoughts from being at the game in person:

1) Chill. This loss, while painful both to Jazz fans and players, doesn't suggest that we need to examine every aspect of our franchise and its players and hit a reset button. We've known that the Warriors are the best team in the NBA since the Durant decision. We've known that the Jazz aren't in the same tier of champion contention and that it would take a great deal of luck for the Jazz to rise above the Warriors in the next two years, requiring some combination of injuries to the Warriors' core four and development from Rudy, Hood, Exum, and Lyles that goes way above their suggested arc (of which only Rudy, and to a lesser extent Hood, are accomplishing.)

2) Give the Jazz a perfectly healthy roster, put this game in Salt Lake, and take out both of Curry and Green and take away half a game of Klay. Insert Ian Clark to run the point for the majority of minutes. Who wins now? Because that's essentially what the Jazz were up against last night. No Favs, no Hill, not much of Hood. It's really hard to win against a superteam of this caliber. It's far harder when there's still major injuries.

3) OKC lost with their All Star point guard putting up great numbers. Portland lost with their All Star point guard putting up good numbers. Houston lost with their All Star guard putting up amazing numbers. Hayward could have certainly had a better game, but let's not pretend that when you're the first option on a team with your second, third, and fourth option all being injured for the full or half of the game that you're going to have an easy time.

4) The Warriors are insane. Watching them in person was nuts and I'm both thankful that I was able to see what may go down as one of the greater teams in history, sad that it came against a terrible Jazz loss, and frankly, just disgusted that the league created the conditions that allowed this to happen. We need far more parity in the NBA and, as fans, we need to put pressure on the NBA to make systemic changes so that the LeBron Heat and the Durant Warriors can't happen any more. It, quite simply, doesn't foster the competitive equity that is so important for sports. And the only way it changes is if fans put pressure on the league, and the owners, to change the system.
