Panic, confusion and kaos on the tarmac.


Gunshots erupted at the Fort Lauderdale airport on Friday, leaving multiple people dead.

Authorities say the gunman, who appeared to be acting alone, is in custody.
Here's the latest on what we know:

• Five people are dead, a law enforcement official told CNN.

• Thirteen people were transported to a hospital, Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told CNN.

• Multiple reports on social media -- including tweets from former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer -- described the shooting.

Update into:

Law enforcement sources tell CNN the suspect, identified as Esteban Santiago, had brought the firearm in his checked luggage.

Authorities said it was too early to understand why the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident, opened fire at the Florida airport.

Here's the latest on what we know:

• Thirteen people were shot and eight were taken to hospitals, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. Five others died from their wounds.

• The suspect joined the National Guard in Puerto Rico in 2007. In April 2010, he went to Iraq for 10 months. A spokeswoman for the Alaska Army National Guard said Santiago was in the Army Reserves before he joined the guard there in November 2014. Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead said Santiago was discharged in August for unsatisfactory performance.

• The suspect showed up several months ago at the FBI office in Anchorage, law enforcement officials told CNN. He was interviewed and said he was hearing voices in his head, including some telling him to join ISIS. He was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, the officials said. He voluntarily checked himself in, the officials explained.

• Law enforcement sources told CNN that the suspect flew to Florida on Friday from Alaska and had declared the firearm. When he arrived at the airport, the suspect retrieved a bag at baggage claim, took out the gun and started firing, the sources said. One source said he went to the bathroom to get the gun out of his luggage and emerged firing.

• Israel said the gunman likely acted alone. The sheriff said it was too early to say whether terrorism was the motive.

• Gov. Rick Scott told reporters at the airport: "The citizens of Florida will not tolerate senseless acts of evil. Whoever is responsible will held accountable to the fullest extent of the law." The governor said that now was time to mourn the dead and pray for hospitalized victims, not talk about gun laws.

Yup. Lets ignore radical Islam and pretend its a religion of peace. Seems to be working so well.

Lets see, leftists are for womens rights, gay rights, religion out of government, against extreme far rightism, etc.. But are super for tolerance of Islam. Makes sense!

People (not leftists, since it is insulting to many who feel the same way on all sides) are tolerant of Islam because they realize there are millions of Muslims peacefully living their lives in this country like everyone else. Everyone knows about the Islamists. Nobody lives under a rock. But they would rather not alienate their fellow citizens who have nothing to do with that ideology.

Also, what does this story have to do with Islam? I read something about him saying that he believed the government is controlling his mind to make him a member of ISIS. But this is clearly a case of a mentally ill individual, and not a serious ideologue.
 
This was a former member of the U.S. Military who had serious mental health issues and who sought help for his mental heath issues.

I'm not sure there's much that could've been done to prevent this. Sounds like the guy had a lot of problems upstairs.

It's a shame that people in this thread are using a tragedy like this to make cheap political zingers. As if that takes much creativity. This board is becoming worse and worse. I remember back in it's early 2000s it was in its prime. Actual discussion took place. Now it appears to just be a breeding ground for trolls. So sad

Give me a break. You're one of the foremost posters when it comes to making cheap political posts. Even when I agree with the position you're fighting for I seldom agree with you. You're probably one of the top 5 worst posters in the history of Jazzfanz. HOF first ballot, Thriller is one of the worst posters ever.

How do you pick out the idiots? Can someone pretend to not be an idiot and pass the idiot test and aquire a gun and then show their true selves at that point?

You assume that there's no good way to filter out the idiots, so you limit access altogether.

As in Americans should assume there's no good way to do it, so you shouldn't bother trying. Limit it altogether

In a lot of the countries psychologist/mental test is required to get licence to own a gun. Guy with history of hearing voices in the head would have never pass it.

Well... yes.

But we can't have those because the NRA has bought off the GOP.

I guess I meant it more in the present tense, that there wasn't much that could've been done to avoid this. Of course our lax gun laws contribute to thousands of avoidable deaths per year. But money is free speech and the NRA has bought off one entire political party. I've basically lost all hope in ever having sane gun laws in this country. The NRA is too powerful
