Rumor: Kings plan on offering DeMarcus Cousins $200 million this summer

DeMarcus Cousins has been at the center of trade discussions since … well, forever. At least that’s what it feels like. Now, instead of being on the move it appears the Sacramento Kings star is set to cash in on a big payday that will keep him in Northern California, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.

Thanks to a stipulation in the upcoming CBA, Cousins can sign for more money as a King, an angle Sacramento is likely to use as they approach this offseason.

Via ESPN;

Cousins, 26, is considered one of the best centers in the NBA and he’s been whispered about as a prime trade candidate for a while, mostly due to as concerns his relationship with the team has spoiled over time.

His time has been odd as a member of the Kings. Cousins has never made the playoffs, he’s endured six head coaches in seven seasons, including interim, and he’s mixed stellar, All-Star level play with irrational, emotional outbursts on the court.

Still, his talent is undeniable, and the Designated Player Extension is built for this exact scenario: to keep big stars in smaller markets long-term by throwing a monumental amount of money at them.

If Cousins does sign an extension this summer, let’s hope it works out for all parties.

This is GREAT news. SAC as a small market team being able to keep Cousins would send a big message to the rest of the NBA as well as validating the fact that the new CBA is able to achieve its goal of making smaller market teams competitive in the FA market.

The formation of the GSW 4 is a step backward, but if this happens, it will be a step forward.

Cousins staying with that dumpster fire in Sacramento would be the absolute worst move he can make for his career. Bail the **** out Boogie!

5 months early? So an early-second trimester fetus? I have my doubts...

Not so sure. How many teams would kowtow to his every demand? How many fanbase would be so forgiving of his behaviour? If he goes to BOS as it had been reported, the fanbase there would have him for lunch after the first 10 games. They would never go along with his on/off court antics.

Also moving around isn't always a good move. Look at Dwight, for example...

Who cares? He has the potential to be an all-time great big if he moves to a real team. I'm a firm believer that Cousins, if put in a good situation, would grow the **** up. Or he can rot away in the NBA's worst franchise. It's a no-brainer to me.

He can also make way more money in Sactown.

I guess it depends if you think one's 'character' can change. Popovic doesn't think so. In his infamous lecture he says about the players: "They am who they am". As in, he doesn't believe players' characters and tendencies will change. And when it's 2 seconds on the clock and the game on the line, it will show up on the court. Hence he'll always pick character over talent.

Here's the video, the speech is at 2.08 min. mark.

with 60,000 posts it's likely somewhere along the way...

That's what I heard but it was more than a year ago, so not sure where his mindset is now.

Yeah I wonder about that. You'd have to be damn sure that your new situation is going to work before walking away from $200m.

I mean, ... that is a HUGE sum of money. It could make him literally one of the richest man in Sacramento. He could even buy a share of SAC's ownership of he wanted to ... LOL ...

Has there ever been an owner/current player in the this league? He could be the first. That would be awesome. He could sign who he wants. He could fire who he wants. Brings in a new GM and a new coach if he doesn't like how things are going.

LOL ... ultimate power.
