I'm not a very old guy, I grew up during the birth and rise of rap. That being said, I always chuckle when people defend rap. I'll stop short of calling it "not music" but I do find it extremely amusing how vigorously people will defend a genre of "music" which largely consists of sampling somebody else's work, and laying down X-Rated nursery rhymes on top of it.

Thats a very incorrect blanket statement. A. Not all rap/hip hop is x-rated. Lots of clean stuff out there. (ever heard of will smith?) Even some cristian rap too.
B. simplifying the lyrics of these guys to nursery rhyme level just shows that you have no idea what you are talking about.
Every genre of music has some simplistic lyrics (ever heard we are the champions by queen?) but there is tons of rap/hip hop with extremely difficult and clever lyrics. I would love for you to try to write a rap song and see how it stands up lyrically with some eminem, tupac, lupe fiaso, gym class heroes, etc etc.

Also some (thought admittedly the minority) hip hop/rap has dudes playing drums, guitars, etc not just using other peoples music. Gym class heroes is one example.

And there is more than just writing creative good lyrics. You have to have timing, technique, flow and other nuances to be a great rapper for the most part. (of course there is some straight trash rap/hip hop out there too but that can be said of any genre of music)

I just love everything about his game.

When he came on board I thought he would be a nice stop gap between now and when Dante is ready.

Now I want him to lead the charge for the next few years. He is a big piece to the core.
Hill and Hay have good chemistry too.

lol at those discounting the most influential and ground breaking music genre to shape popular, and underground, music over the last 30 years. If you rip the lyricism and production, you don't understand music history (dating back to the turn of the century and the blues, to be be general) or have any musical vision looking forward. I could go on for pages.....

Hip hop, rap, and R&B have changed the face of art and music worldwide forever. This coming from a huge heavy rock music fan.

Go yell at kids of get off your lawn.

Holy ****.

The thing is hip-hop is by far the most diverse and eclectic music genre of all time. If you think rap is just that, then you have only heard one section of what the genre is.

I've owned rap albums, and listened to a ton of rap. Some of it I even enjoyed. That being said, some people enjoyed listening to Disco. That doesn't automatically mean that it was complex music written by talented songwriters and musicians. Rap is the biggest movement in music over the last 30 years. I can't even begin to argue that. But again popularity doesn't automatically equal quality.

I'll just agree to disagree with you guys and keep listening to music that I feel is actually crafted art.

Not sure why you quoted me and brought up popularity and complexity as I didnt say anything about popularity or complexity.

Love me some rap music and hip hop (pretty much same thing to me). My pandora station that im listening to the most currently is gym class heroes station. Lots of lupe fiasco, B.O.B., eminem, Lacrae (never heard of him until I started listening to this station), NF (him either), G-eazy.... Good stuff all around. Mostly hip hop stuff im guessing but i have mostly been a rap fan all my life (tupac, too short, dj quick, HI-C, method man, N.W.A, Jay-Z, spice 1, ghetto boys, even all the way back to KRS-1, epmd, eric b and rakim, rodney o and joe cooley, rbl posse, public enemy etc.)

How does one distinguish rap from hip hop anyway? Is it basically that rap music is more "hard" gansta **** and hip hop is more "clean", less gangsta urban? I have never known the difference and use the two interchangably.

Rap is strictly the music-- spoken word/poetry song characteristically over a music signature.

Hip hop is the culture of which rap is a part of. Includes graffiting, breakdance, fashion activism etc

Straight up ppl who don't think rap is art are either dumb, racist, or both. Wtf?

You can say it's not your taste or that you don't resonate with it but in what world is it not talent-filled or art?

Good info. Makes sense.

So I either have a low IQ, or am a racist because I don't like the same type of "music" as you? And the "music" you're calling me a dumb racist over just happens to be the "music" that's main talking points are:

-Gettin' them $100 bills
-Purple Drank
-Constantly references women as "bitches"
-Constant use of the "N" word

Lol, and I'm the racist idiot?

Well this definitely displays your ignorance on full blast. As I said, hip-hop is the most diverse musical genre (both instrumentally and topically) known in the recording era. If you think all rap music is just what you posted above, then you are ignorant. Ignorance can manifest itself in low IQ and racism.

And I'm sure you probably just don't care. I'm not asking you to research and listen to every movement within hip-hop in an effort to convert you, but if you want to not appear ignorant I wouldn't throw around the talking points you did in that post because they are just flat out objectively wrong.

U don't get it. Lemme try and explain - those things you have listed are just a vehicle, a persona, for many to make careers and make simple formulaic hit songs etc. So when you have someone like 50 cent who verifiable is a goon of that status, it's a recipe for a bit of a folk legend and bottom line; explosive sales..

To pigeon hole those characteristics to rap though is flawed because there's many artists who don't represent that gimmick/persona whatsoever. Some of the biggest newer rappers out these days don't glorify that lifestyle at all, Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino for example have found their niche making soulful music. There's actually incredible variance within the genre.

Its okay not to like genre of music, but to generalize an entire genre into a very simplistic and incorrect statement is wrong. It is equally wrong to say people who dont think its art are either racist or dumb.

The genre of rap has effected all music in the world. Any genre of music that you like has had positive effects from the rap genre. I dont personally like most country music but I understand why others do and understand its effect on our culture and other music. I also dont listen to that much rap but I like some of it and dislike plenty of it. I understand its had a huge effect for the good on music in general and there are fantastic and talented artists who create rap and influence many people with it.

'Good' rap music is simpler to make than most forms of music tho for damn sure. If you put a gun to my head I'm sure I could write a catchy rap album in 24 hours given HOT BEATS.

The right beat or hook is basically like an alley oop for a hot song.. in other genre's it can't be that easy.

See Rae Sremmurd ----- the other dude (not swae lee) spits generic 6/10 verses nonstop but because of the beats and Swae Lee it's hit after hit after hit..

Listen to the song Swang by them...
