In case you aren't aware, there is a MASSIVE recall due to Takata airbags exploding and killing or injuring passengers. This situation is much larger than most consumers realize, as the NHTSA is allowing the recall to be done in phases as the replacement bags can't be manufactured fast enough. It affects most car manufacturers (see above line), and as a consumer, it is very difficult if not possible to tell which vehicles have Takata airbags. Just because your car is not listed ,does NOT mean you don't have Takata airbags.

My 2012 Toyota 4Runner is officially recalled at this point. And the recall advises I do not have a passenger sit in the front due to the danger. I tried to get a rental car from Toyota until the fix can be completed, (the fix is unavailable--and Toyota has no idea when a replacement bag will be available), and Toyota Corporate followed up with me and told me they had determined that the airbag is not a risk to me until May of 2018, so no rental is available (even though the recall says not to use the front passenger seat). I asked Toyota to provide me with a letter confirming the front passenger seat is safe, contrary to the statements in the recall. They said they couldn't do that.

My wife and I have owned a dozen Toyota vehicles, and they have all been bullet proof. When I call Toyota corporate, the agents first response was, "wow, you have owned a lot of Toyotas". Pretty disappointed with Toyota, and I hope my 200 Series Land Cruiser doesn't have the same problem too, but part of what determine which cars are recalled are based on complaints/incidents reported to the NHTSA.

This recall is so broad, that the NHTSA is allowing the recall to happen in phases, meaning you could have a dangerous bag, but they are prioritizing when your call gets recalled. Mine has finally reached the stage of very dangerous, and I still have no idea when it will get fixed. Ugh.

I think expecting a rental car is unreasonable.

Thay'd probably be more favorable to giving you excellent terms to trade in your current 4 Runner for a new(er) one.

The recall itself says a car rental is available until the fix can be made. I think it is unreasonable I can't safely use my vehicle because by not using the passenger seat I can't fit my whole family in the car.

Did you mention that the recall notice says that a rental car will be available? Obviously if they say that then they should provide one.

How many people does your vehicle hold?

But seriously, how frequently are the airbags exploding? Sounds like it becomes more likely over time? Can't you just have them disable the airbag and rely on the good old fashioned seat belts if you absolutely need that front seat available?

My current vehicle has a recall because it's possible the ignition can accidentally turn itself off if the car goes off the road and experiences a lot of bumping around. I'm not going to take the vehicle in to have this fixed because I'm really not worried about the 0.0001% chance that this could happen to me.

There have been a number of deaths and many more injuries. Search Takata deaths to get an idea. It is not possible to disable them(Toyota refused to do it). Yes, the airbags get more dangerous over time (supposedly). That is how the recall started, but then there were many injuries and deaths in the supposedly safe bags that weren't old enough to have become dangerous. Now they are saying it is also due to manufacturing defects, so even the newer bags are dangerous. Many deaths are occuring in low speed, otherwise non-lethal collisions that shoot metal into people's body from the defective airbags. https://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-airbag-recall-rentals-20160419-story.html The main pic in the preceding link shows what can happen (this passenger was just maimed).

The problem is so massive the NHTSA is allowing the recall in phases because it would be impossible to fix all the bags timely. It is a huge mess.

My 4Runner holds seven (back two seats are only kid friendly tbh), and Toyota initially offered me a compact rental from Enterprise (and after I inquired about a car with seating for six corporate toyota told me no rental would be available at all).

I wonder how much you could sue them for if something (god forbid) happened to you or a family member due to the faulty airbags.

If I was the passenger, easily into the $10s of dollars. The good news is if I die my student loans die with me.
