What's new

Planning on moving to SLC. Need helpful advice.

Because of what Utah requires. I looked everywhere for "CDL transfer to Utah" and all of I can find is that I have to start from scratch no matter if I have my CDL already or not, which I have had since 2013.

Backing for some people is the hardest thing to do. Especially in between other trucks.

I would call the drivers license division. As far as I know the state recognizes reciprocal licenses.

Um, is nobody gonna help The Fresh Prince think about the downsides of this move?

Let's get the ball rolling:

TFP,

There are very few places as beautiful as Utah, and Salt Lake City is a great place to make your home base if the outdoors is your passion. I'm absolutely enthralled with every inch between the Wasatch Mountains, Southern Utah, and the Sierra Nevada. THAT SAID, as a city, SLC leaves plenty to be desired. Especially for a single man or woman. While the music scene has historically punched well above its weight, there can be very little to do in SLC; I get the sense that the "culture" is either the higher-end theaters and venues that target a middle-aged, predominately white and conservative crowd OR the 'harder edged' 20-somethings (again, predominantly white, and many of whom get pulled into a loop that is reacting to the conservative values). The dating scene is suffocatingly small.

I've considered moving back to SLC, but only on one condition: that I have the ability to work remotely. That would really allow me to take advantage of the outdooring opportunities. Weekend warrioring has its limits.

And, as others have mentioned, getting into winter sports is a must.

you really hit the nail on the head. once i finally got into software engineering (which is booming in SL right now) and could work from home, life got a lot better. Single life as a non mormon in SLC is a bit of a drag. that said, get outside and enjoy utah if you can. i'm an avid mtn biker, and SLC area (plus park city) can keep you busy all year, and you're a short drive from moab or st george in the winter. I've lived in Ogden for a while now and it has quite a different vibe than most of SL or Utah Counties.

TFP going to be the 16th black man in Utah.

Even with the satire, cy makes a good point. Be prepared to be in the land of white (and depending on where you are, hispanic). there are very few blacks in Utah. If ethnic diversity is important to you, there are a few cities that are pretty diverse (but still lack a solid black community), west valley city, salt lake proper, and Ogden are really about it.. Most of the state is white.

I have been with the same person for 15 years so I cab only go on observation. E-dating seems to be the place to be. My 2 brother in laws always have a date. One is a machinist taht moved here from northern california the other a hippy that moved here from Olympia. The machinist has recently found someone that he likes which is nice because we can hang out again. For the previous year-year and half he was constantly bailing to go screw another girl or two. He's in his 20's. The hippy is in his 30's. Similar story except he has a thing for crazy women but thinks of himself as a gentleman. He dates sweet girls and he'll bring them over but he usually never takes it beyond friendship even though you can tell the girl is crazy about him. Then he'll find some girl that is just plain crazy and fall head over heals.

The biggest downside that I see is wages. Utah does have low unemployment and a low cost of living but wages more than negate that. You are going to make more doing the same job elsewhere. Last year SLC was ranked the toughest market for first time home buyers. Prices of homes as well as rents have gone up much faster than wages. Rents in Sugarhouse went up 20 percent last year alone. I might have told a truck driver from Texas different a few years ago but not now. I wouldn't want to be trying to establish myself in this city today.

The inversion/air quality sucks ***. Easily the worst thing about slc to me.

Lot of Polynesians too

Tfp looks like Austin Rivers. Utahns won't be too shocked.
