Chaffetz Not Running For Re-Election

Somehow I doubt we've seen the last of him. We couldn't be that lucky. I suspect a run at the governor's office in 2020. Didn't he say he wasn't running for any office in 2018?

He's going to have competition for that position. Speaker of the House Hughes has been eyeing that position for a while now.

Hughes v Chaffetz competing in that primary is like trying to decide which trump gaffe was the worst. Hughes makes Buddy Ciansi look like jimmy carter. You'd be hard pressed to find a more corrupt state politician in America.
 
Chaffetz becoming governor might make me seriously consider moving out of state.

In a way. But he tried to establish himself as an ethics watchdog and was happy to nip the heels of any and every possible issue involving Obama and Hillary. But with very real issues with Trump not fully divesting his interests, Trump's possible links to Russian meddling in the election, Trump not understanding the significance of any written statement coming from him or his office, Ivanka's own conflicts with her commercial brand and her efforts to copyright her name all over the world, etc., etc.. Yeah, Chaffitz isn't willing to pick that low hanging fruit.

I've never liked him but I could have given him credit for having some integrity had he gone after Trump with even half the enthusiasm he went after Obama with.

He doesn't care about ethics, he cares about Rs and Ds.

I've heard others say that. I don't know you, so this isn't personal, but Utah is getting too crowded. So where do I donate to his Governor campaign?

My favorite is district 2

South Salt Lake and West Valley... and, beaver, Cedar City, and Kanab. And people wonder why so many in the salt lake valley are pissed about not receiving representation?

Look at district 1. Downtown, the avenues, park city... and Logan, verbal, and Price. Cuz all of those locations are totally homogeneous!!!

Other states have solved this problem by giving the distracting map to a 3rd party. In Utah the GOP won't ever do this because it's just too easy to award yourself power. Utah easily has the most corrupt legislature in the nation. Anyone hear about UTA? They're being investigated by the Feds over shady dealings... guess who ran UTA just a few years ago? Speaker of the house Hughes (Draper). Guess who bought land only to quickly resale it to UTA at a steep price? Majority leader Neiderhouser (Sandy). Guess who heads the state Edu committee? A charter school lobbyist, Stephenson (Draper). Guess who pushed for the prison relocation? The two largest land developers in the legislature, Hughes and Wilson (N SL).

Guess who proposed a terrible alternative to Medicaid expansion? It was criticized for merely enriching insurance companies while providing little to no coverage for those who made too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to buy even Obamacare insurance? Jim Dunning, a health insurance salesman.

The list goes on and on and on...

Yep, re-districting should definitely be handled by a non-partisan or bi-partisan group.

Gerrymandering in general is one of the most disgraceful things about American politics.
 
I started out liking him alright, but he's done some things the last few years that bugged me. Found myself wondering if he just liked attention from billing himself as an ethics bulldog.

Be interesting to see what happens. One thing is certain: Hatch needs to go. If he has a good challenger, things will be even more interesting with these seats up for grabs. I'm more of a libertarian, and most republicans make me wanna hurl.
 
I've never heard of anyone giving up like this without health, marital, or legal issues.

I wonder how much of Chaffwtz's decision is based on upcoming legal issues? Something big might've happened in the Chaffetz household? Or perhaps someone tipped him off that trump is going to be prosecuted hard and that Chaffetz's unwillingness to investigate anything trump related could possibly indict himself?

Certainly he'd still be a shoe in for reelection. To the best of my knowledge, this move doesn't make sense politically for himself or for the GOP. If the GOP wanted him out, they'd be hard pressed to find a better candidate in his district. Hughes and Bramble are probably the best known. Hughes is speaker of the house and will most likely go for governor. And Bramble is probably too old to make a House run.

If he does give up his position, I believe the governor will appoint someone in his stead until 2018's election. Which could be competitive if the republican candidate isn't well known or popular and the democrat's candidate continues to raise big money. She had raised more money than even Chaffetz!

He said he wanted to return to the private sector. I'm going to guess money.
