Looks like there was nothing to Rep. Nunes surveillance claims, after all:

https://www.cnn.com/2017/04/11/politics/intelligence-contradicts-nunes-unmasking-claims/

"Washington (CNN)After a review of the same intelligence reports brought to light by House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers and aides have so far found no evidence that Obama administration officials did anything unusual or illegal, multiple sources in both parties tell CNN.

Their private assessment contradicts President Donald Trump's allegations that former Obama national security adviser Susan Rice broke the law by requesting the "unmasking" of US individuals' identities. Trump had claimed the matter was a "massive story."

And, it turns out, Carter Page was the Trump campaign associate that the FBI was monitoring via a FISA warrant:

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/04/fisa-warrant-carter-page/522744/

"A Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court judge approved a secret warrant request by the FBI to monitor Trump advisor Carter Page last year, the Washington Post reported Tuesday. Page would be the first known member of a presidential campaign to be targeted by a FISA court warrant, an extraordinary move for a federal law-enforcement agency to undertake during an American general election.

Multiple news outlets had reported in recent months that the FBI sought at least one FISA warrant targeting someone in Trump’s orbit during the presidential campaign. The Post is the first to identify Page, a national-security advisor for the Trump campaign, as the warrant’s target. No formal charges have been filed against Page, and he has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or impropriety.

The warrant’s existence is also likely to fuel claims by Trump allies that the president’s campaign was illicitly spied upon by the Obama administration. Page told the Post that its reported existence “confirms all of my suspicions about unjustified, politically motivated government surveillance” and compared himself to Martin Luther King, Jr., who was repeatedly harassed by the FBI during the civil-rights movement.

But the warrant cuts both ways for Trump. Applying for one suggests federal investigators had strong suspicions about Page’s ties to Russian officials. And to obtain the warrant, the Justice Department would have persuaded a federal judge serving the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court—often simply referred to as the FISA court—that investigators had probable cause to believe a Trump campaign official was either acting as an agent for a foreign power or knowingly aiding one."

So, according to both GOP and Democrat sources who have now reveiwed the same documents spoken of by Nunes, Susan Rice did nothing illegal or improper, and there is still no evidence whatsoever that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower. And FBI Director Comey testified in a public hearing before the House Intelligence Committee investigating Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election that the FBI was indeed monitoring Trump associates to determine if there was coordination between the Russian efforts and the Trump campaign. And we've known that for quite some time. Look into how tough it is to obtain a FISA warrant. All the hot air spewed by Trump was, as interpreted by some, nothing but a diversionary tactic. Trump was bulls**ting all along....

look here:

and of course the other famous one about Assad gassing people and Donald fiddling, then USA proceeds to send 59 missiles who shall not be named here because their name is offensive towards native Americans. their name starts with "toma" and ends with "hawk".

so this is a CLEAR 2-0.

looking forward to @thrillers new thread. to make it a HAT trick

The foreign policy focus involving Syria and North Korea have taken the news cycle's focus off the FBI and Intelligence Committee's investigations, but there have been interesting developments.

One involves the assistance provided by foreign intelligence services, principle the British, but other European agencies as well, including the Dutch:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/apr/13/british-spies-first-to-spot-trump-team-links-russia

"It is understood that GCHQ was at no point carrying out a targeted operation against Trump or his team or proactively seeking information. The alleged conversations were picked up by chance as part of routine surveillance of Russian intelligence assets. Over several months, different agencies targeting the same people began to see a pattern of connections that were flagged to intelligence officials in the US."

“One source suggested the official investigation was making progress. “They now have specific concrete and corroborative evidence of collusion,” the source said. “This is between people in the Trump campaign and agents of [Russian] influence relating to the use of hacked material.”

Another interesting angle is the degree to which the FBI was taking that infamous dossier more seriously then was at first apparent when its contents were first leaked to the press:

https://www.cnn.com/2017/04/18/poli...-donald-trump-russia-investigation/index.html

It would not surprise me if, even with Rep Nunes stepping down from being in charge of the House Intelligence Committee's investigation, that that committee eventually produces two reports, one by the GOP focused on leaks, and one by the Democrats focused on Russian actions and any connections between the Russians and Trump campaign associates, such as Carter Page. The Senate Inteliugence Committee, at least at this point, seems to stand a much better chance of issuing a bipartisan report eventually. As has been reported elsewhere, the FBI investigation is a very long way from complete....

@thriller, there is a nice plate of crow waiting for you!

thriller has abandoned this thread! come back thriller. own up brother

I understand that you likely wish this to be between you and Thiller, but since we now know, from both Democratic and GOP sources, that Nunes' claims have been completely discredited, see the link earlier in this thread, in comment #204, and since there is bipartisan agreement that Rice did not act improperly, based on representatives of both parties examining the documents Nunes first used to create his dramatic announcement, again, see the link regarding Nunes earlier in this thread, I am wondering why you persist in believing that anything released up to this point actually supports Trump's original claim that the Obama administration was surveilling Trump in Trump Tower? Nothing released to date supports Trump's claims at all.

Trump was never the target of the surveillance. The Russian agents were. Sucks for Trump that his people were in regular contact with Russian agents who were being surveilled.

Carter Page is not Donald Trump. They're two different people. And the FBI had Page on their "Russian connection" radar since 2013, when Russian agents tried to recruit him. The only FISA warrant they obtained was for Carter Page. I don't even thnk the Russian investigation is even going to reach as far as Trump. Page and Manafort were but 2 of the campaign's associates with deep Russian connections. Either, or both, had Trump's election as in their own interest. Either, or both, could have acted on their own without any knowledge by Trump. I would not be surprised if Page eventually faced treason charges, but I would be very surprise if the leads ever reach as far as Trump. But, what looks bad is reflected in the exact words used by John Dean to describe the optics recently: "I know a coverup when I see one". That's not a good look at all, and that's what the Trump administration is doing.

The GOP is just creating a diversionary narrative around leaks regarding the investigation of Russian interference, but History will judge the Russian interference itself is the bigger and more important story. Still, I do not believe, as some do, that this investigation is a doorway to impeachment. The people who need to be concerned are Carter Page, Paul Manafort, and Roger Stone. And, judging from the volume of their denials, they are concerned at this point. But, bottom line, per this thread, is there still has been not one shred of evidence, zero confirmation, that the Obama administration was spying on Donald Trump.....

The only lie told was by Donald Trump, who appears to be a pathological liar to boot. That Obama wiretapped him in Trump Tower. A 100% lie for which absolutely no evidence has ever emerged.

FISA warrants are obtained when the FBI can provide "probable cause" that an American citizen is improperly acting as an agent for a foreign nation. In other words, acting as a spy. What you call, apparently, spying on Trump, is the FBI doing its job. Further, the only Trump associate for whom a FISA warrant was obtained was for an individual, Carter Page, who had been under their scope since 2013, long before Trump came along as a candidate.

Now consider what Trump was doing, instead of more important things pertinent to being chief executive of the nation. Creating a farce, a false narrative, involving late night visits by Nunes to the grounds of the White House, to examine documents provided by the White House itself. And for what purpose? To somehow make it seem like Trump had been correct in claiming Obama wiretapped him.

Once other committee members see those documents, the whole farce collapses, as does the claims, also made directly by Trump, that Susan Rice broke the law. And why such a farce? It would seem because the man's ego is so insecure, he cannot stand to appear to have been mistaken. Who pulls crap like that?

One lie after lie after lie. 3 million illegals voted for Clinton. The inaugural crowd was the "largest in history". Obama spied on me. And on and on the lies stretch.

And John Dean, who should after all, know what a White House directed coverup looks like, stating "I know a coverup when I see one." Indeed. Why? Well, certainly the administration would not want History to judge that Trump campaign associates actually colluded with Russian interference in the 2016 election in favor of Trump. That's a black eye, and would always appear as a black eye in the eyes of History. So, I don't blame them. Although, just to restate, I do not personally believe it will ever reach as far as the candidate himself, even if the coverup is in fact directed by him.

Thriller was right, although I might have phrased it differently. But, bottom line, Trump's claim was just one more of his "off the top of his head" nonsense, non factual statements. Expect the GOP to continue to focus on their diversionary narrative of leaks somehow being more important then the story at the center of the leaks. History is far more impartial, however, and will judge Russian interference in our election as the far more important narrative.

I don't blame Trump for wanting to crush this developing narrative. But, presenting the appearance of a White House engaged in a coverup is only driving his opponents to dig in and dig deeper. And the truth will out. If I were him, I would certainly hope that certain contents of that infamous dossier are not confirmed by the FBI, as other portions already have been confirmed. Could get really embarrassing under the circumstances.

I don't know if you are confusing incidental collection with spying, or confusing unmasking names with spying, but there is still not one shred of evidence that Trump's original claims, in one of his tweet storms, are anything but 100% BS. Making Thriller correct, although I'm not here to defend him, he can speak for himself if he chooses. But you have bought lock, stock, and barrel, into the diversionary narrative. History will laugh heartily at that bogus attempt at diverting the light from shining on the heart of the matter....

BTW, you ask why did the FBI not just come out and say they were using a FISA warrant? Well, the FBI is expected to not talk openly at all where an active investigation is concerned. So far, only under oath has Comey himself talked about these matters to Congress. Further, I read just yesterday, that the leaks involving the FBI looking at certain people( and the FISA warrant for Page emerged in just that way, as a leak), is now hindering their investigations, because, once individuals learn they are being watched, they change their behavior to better protect themselves. It really sounds like you are just not up to speed on any of this, and are believing what you want to believe. Not a crime, I'm sure I do the same thing at times. But it's like the whole fake news phenomenon. For some of us, fake news is headlines like "Woman gives birth while skydiving". For others, fake news has become any news that does not support one's preconceived conclusions..
