Charles Barkly

Didn't Jerry Sloan pick Charles Barkley as the Hall of Fame presenter?

I think they have a special relationship that they have not disclosed.

Here's a bit about it:

Following a tradition of selecting a current member of the Hall of Fame to do the presenting, Sloan asked Charles Barkley to do the induction introduction.

That might seem an odd choice, but Barkley had a fun rivalry with the Jazz during his career with the Sixers, Suns and Rockets and often speaks highly about the organization during his TNT analyst gig. Barkley, a 2006 Hall inductee, also played under Sloan during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, when the Utah coach was a Dream II assistant to Lenny Wilkens.

Sloan would not divulge his selection when asked by media members last week, saying that he had been asked to keep it under wraps. He did, however, act honored that his mystery person — who so happens to be the fun-loving and formidable Round Mound of Rebound — would accept his invitation.

"I did choose a guy for a lot of different reasons," Sloan said. "People ask why probably, I'm sure. I was really excited and shocked that he would accept, so it made me feel good."

Charles said they should do both. (Play slow paced in their set offense, and run when the opportunity is there.) Jazz teams of old had a great balance of running a disciplined offense, and taking advantages of fast breaks when the opportunities were available. When you can get easy baskets before the other teams defense can set up, you get high percentage points.

Also, if you don't run, and your opponent knows you don't, it allows them to crash the boards without consequence.

Correct. And in that context his comment makes a lot more sense. The Jazz pull up in transition or fast breaks unless they have ridiculous numbers. He's not the only one who has said The Jazz should push more in these situations.

He says the Jazz should look for more fast break points. He is right. He isn't saying we should speed up the sets, just to be more opportunistic given our quality of wings.

Clips have not been crashing the offensive boards and are focused on stopping the break. The 2 Hayward fast breaks were because he outhustled them. I don't see Jazz getting many additional opportunities unless we start forcing more turnovers.

Thanks for this embarrassing thread TPP. Barkley was right on. He's just asking them to take advantage of opportunities when they come up. He's not asking them to speed up their sets.

Well I can't help you are always the embraced person? So angry and always YELL!

It does wear the other team out having to play so much D for that length of time and has paid off handsomely in 4th qtrs this year has it not?

This can be what I say to! I agree! The other one who hate thought I can have only don't REALLY know basketball. Only what Matt Harpring tells them in basketball.

He was hyped on Kanter too when Jazz had him.

He is still hyped about him. Keeps saying "I'm a big Kanter fan". But I believe it's mostly because he always emphasizes big man game and Kanter is the definition for it on the offensive end. In fact if he only had average defensive awareness, he would start instead of playing 3 minutes.

Strange.

My friend at Home Depot worked on Jerry's farm a dozen summers ago. He thought it odd that the swather hooked up to the John Dear had Cyrillic lettering.

An old golfing buddy of mine said he bumped into Charles in a Moscow bar 4 years ago. When he asked what Charles was doing in Moscow, Charles acted embarrassed and mumbled "golf," and then walked away. My buddy figured he must not have heard right, since there was 4 inches of snow on the ground.

Add to this that both Jerry and Charles were contributors to Jason Chaffetz last campaign and one begins to wonder.
