Boston vs Utah for Hayward

This is not coming down to money. This is about him putting himself into a situation that will make him, his wife and his kids happy. Both teams have a pretty good looking future. Unfortunately Boston has a team full of good dudes, not boneheads. I hope I'm wrong but I think the lure of becoming a Celtic and a change of scenery might prove too tempting. He's probably agonizing over the decision.

Why does he need a change of scenery? Pretty sure the Jazz are on the upwards swing last time I checked ;)

Maybe he feels like playing in an elite offense rather than an elite defense. He most likely puts up better numbers in Boston = more accolades and praise.

And I think if he goes to Boston he only plays with Thomas for a year. They not going to give that dude a 5 year max and he will probably want it.

Well it's true that there is a real danger in Boston, notably because with a weaker east, signing in Boston means having great chances of making trips to the ECF and sometimes finals regularly.

Might be more efficient, but he won't have more opportunity. He likely gets more attention though for sure.

One thing to note... to get the space to sign Hayward Boston would need to renounce the rights to all unguaranteed contracts and FAs not named Kelly Olynk... then they would need to either:

- Renounce the rights to Kelly making him an unrestricted FA.
- Trade Jae Crowder and take back no salary.
- Trade Avery Bradley and take back little salary.
- Trade $6-7M of Smart, Rozier, Jackson, Mickey and take back no salary.

Doesn't prohibit them from figuring it out, but any wrinkle in the process helps us a little.

Good point, with Boston having the #1 seed and a trip to the ECF's. Why break up the momentum? They have to shake up a good part of their core to get Hayward.

Bigger market he will get more print and all that. Maybe he will get to do national ads as well. However, my guess is that he will not get better number in Boston. It's like playing with koby, he's never going to touch the ball.

I just think he needs to think really really hard before leaving for a bigger market. For some reason this situation reminds me so much of the DWill trade. Not the nuts and bolts of it, (we're not trading a disgruntled player), but the idea that a bigger market will be better for him. I think Gordon has flourished, finally, by being the #1 option. Over there he'll just be another cog in the machine. I could easily see him going there, getting the max, not making the difference they expect for that money, and slipping into Dwillesque relative obscurity. Don't do it LordGord!!!!!

That bigger market also has the patriots, bruins, and red Sox iirc and 2 of those teams are more popular than the Celtics I think.

I think money is going to be the biggest factor. It was a big factor last free agency for Hayward.

The only factor remaining is teams pitch about what they are doing. Hayward doesn't care about what picks teams have and what player they are drafting, he cares about winning. If Jazz can make a good pitch about making a big move for someone to pair up with him and Gobert then he probably stays.

If Utah can't make a solid pitch and/or just say the think the current team will just develop then Boston or other teams can step in and make a big pitch. Boston could make pitch about trading the pick they have for someone big and moving IT for someone and making an elite team that can beat the Warriors and Cavs.

Also I don't Hayward cares about the beating just the Cavs he cares about winning it all and his legacy that comes with that. Being in the East or West doesnt matter if you can't beat the Warriors.

I think last FA was about respect more than money.

That may be. But he did seek out the biggest contact available. Wether or not that was for the money or to prove to himself, the Jazz or the whole league that he was a max player is anyone's guess I suppose. He has always seemed frugal and very money conscience person though. But respect seems important as well to him.

Worse capwise... have to re-sign Bradley, Thomas, Smart next year... Olynk this year.

Asset wise they are loaded unfortunately.

I agree about the assets... the thing is... their assets depreciate in value with time. If they can't trade the no. 1 pick he will be stuck behind their superstar midget for god knows how many years.

You say this but it's absolutely great for the Celtics. They can use Fultz (who would be a dream come true) as a BACKUP for 4 years. They already have brown who will be great AND they could land a top 3 pick NEXT year too.

You say their number 1 pick will be stuck behind thomas but aren't we doing the same thing with Exum? LOL

Plus Lebron will be 33 this year. Even if the cavs are dominate for 2-4 more years, I'd rather deal with that than the Warriors who could be dominate for 6+ years. Just my personal opinion, nothing to do with Hayward's choice

Exum is nowhere near the prospect Fultz is... not in the same area code. Exum can't beat out Neto and Mack... Fultz is a starter day 1 on about 15-20 teams.

I think it will be a huge waste of Fultz to sit behind IT. They might trade AB(or lose him in FA) and try to start them together. Their D will probably suffer from it though.

If the celtics land the number 1 pick tonight, someones offer would have to absolutely blow them away to even think about trading it. I don't care what Fultz would think, he'd start as a backup for thomas unless he outplays him and that's it.

You're also judging Fultz to Exum without Fultz even playing 1 game yet.
